Uniform markings identification - Coldstream Guards WW1
« on: Wednesday 16 November 16 13:53 GMT (UK) »
I have tried to attach a picture of my Grandfather (Joe Hargreaves-Private Coldstream Guards). I was wondering if anyone could help identify the markings on the uniform cuff and above the left breast pocket?
Many thanks for any help.

Above his left breast pocket  are medal ribbons,  one of which has three stripes,   if you look at WW1   medals  via google    you could make a comparison with your mans.

Medal ribbons on left breast, I agree.

I do believe the 4 chevrons on the lower right arm indicate being overseas for 4 years 1915, 16, 17 18.

Thanks. The medal ribbons would fit as he won the Military Medalwhich has three white stripes and he was away from 1915 to 1920ish.
It is all looking right to fit the story. Thank you so much.

The overseas chevron for 1914 was a different colour to the other years. Which is why Medpat can give the years he does.

The Coldstream Guards are one of the very few regiments that appear to have kept a copy of a man's service record - https://www.coldstreamguards.org.uk/histories-of-the-coldstream-guards/archives.html
