George Murphy, distiller
« on: Wednesday 09 November 16 00:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm interested in finding out more about a distiller, probably from Newry, called George Murphy.

George's daughter, Elizabeth Murphy, aged 18, was convicted of larceny in Down in 1840 and transported to Tasmania. On arrival Elizabeth said she was from Newry. Her death certificate says her mother's name was Mary Ann Kavanagh.

I've checked for George Murphy in the following, but he's not mentioned.

The General Directory of Newry, Armagh, and the Towns of Dungannon, Banbridge, Portadown. Warrenpoint, Tandragee, Rosstrevor, Lurgan, Kilkeel, Waringstown, Rathfriland, &c. for 1820

Can anyone suggest other sources for finding out more about George Murphy?

Thanks,

Penny (in Melbourne, Australia)

Thanks for that. Where did you search?

I have checked this convict George Murphy previously. He can't be the father of Elizabeth Murphy, since he's only two years older, and he can't be her brother as his parents' names are different.
Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of Murphys about!

Would there be local records in Newry that might mention George Murphy?

It's the most common surname in Ireland.
