Hmmm.
Matthew Draper Burtcher married Sophie Gerald Stewart in Glasgow in 1898.
Matthew Draper Burtcher was born in 1871 and his birth was registered in Houghton in the March quarter.
In 1881 he's with his parents in Houghton-le-Spring: Head George Grey Burtcher, 47, coal miner; wife Isabella, 46; son George Grey, 12, coal miner; son Matthew, 10; mother-in-law Isabella Draper, 88; all born in County Durham. In 1871 the surname is spelled Butcher.
George Gray Burtcher and Isabella Draper were married in Houghton-le-Spring in 1854.
Sophia Gerald Stewart was born in Old Monkland in 1875. In 1881 she is with her family in New Monkland: Head Donald, 53, Superintendent of County Police, born Lybster; wife Elspeth, 46, born Kirriemuir; children Daniel, 17; Nellie, 15; James, 13; Elsie Ann, 11; Eliza, 9; Peter, 7; Sophie, 5; and Clara, 1; and grandchildren Isabella Young, 4; Robertson Young, 2; and Euphemia Young, 1.
The IGI shows them as the children of Daniel or Donald Stewart and Elspeth Baxter. The IGi doesn't list a marriage of either Donald or Daniel Stewart to Elspeth Baxter, but there is one of David Stewart to E Baxter in Longforgan in 1858. The birth certificates of the children will tell you the date and place of their parents' marriage and hence whether David is indeed Daniel/Donald. (It's quite common for Daniel and Donald to be used interchangeably. Not so common for David to be used for Daniel/Donald, but this could be the second instance I've come across recently.)
It will also tell you the full names of both sets of parents, which will get you back another generation. I think Daniel/Donald's parents may be John Stewart and Ann, and Elspeth's may be James Baxter and Isabella White, but I'm not confident about that.
So do you have Bu(r)tcher, Draper, Stewart, or Baxter any where in your own tree?
