Thank you once again, that looks very good.  Interesting that John Pearce comes from Hampshire.
Something else to look at.  I have also sent for a copy of the Toomers 1815 census.

Just to add to  Chris's reply re Highclere in Hants.

I have found there is a John Pearce bapt. 15-4-1767 s/o John & Eliza - there is also an Elizabeth Peirce bapt. to same parents. (only added because of name variant).

This John may not be the one your after, he would have been aged 34 at marriage in Newbury,
unless it was a 2nd marr.

Just to confuse the issue

There is this baptism in the parish records of St Nicolas Newbury:

Date: 11th July 1779
John Pierce
Son of John and Mary Pierce

Perhaps John went to work in Highclere but was from Newbury.

I did not find any baptisms for the other children listed on the 1815 Toomers census in the St Nicolas parish records but familysearch does have one for an Edward Pearce son of John and Elizth Pearce on 13th May 1804 at Highclere Hampshire.

Interestingly there was this baptism in St Nicolas Newbury which might relate to your John Pearce:

Eliza illegitimate daughter of Sarah Tranter
Born 16th January 1810
Baptised 9th February 1810
Reputed father: JOHN PIERCE

and this burial:

St Nicolas Newbury
30th June 1830
Elizabeth wife of John Pearce
Aged 54

Hi Chris

Thanks for all the extra info.  I had found the burial of Elizabeth in 1830 and also the remarriage of John.  Both were on findmypast. 

Also on there were the burials of Eliza and Henry who feature on the 1815 Toomers census.  I have sent for the dvd of this by the way.

Newbury and Highclere are only about 5 miles apart, so that is possible.  The birth/baptism year (1779) is more likely and is much nearer to the one stated on the 1841 census.  Mary and Eliza are both used as forenames for his daughters  by John Peirce bookbinder!
