There is an entry in the 1841 census in Edinburgh for an Andrew Douglas aged 15.Address 7 Ponton Street
Others in household
George 41
Thomas 22
George 20
Frederick 13
Hugh 10
James 8
John 3

Possible entry in 1871 census for Frederick gives place of birth as Corstorphine (which is on the west side of Edinburgh). Mention this because when I first looked at the 1871 census for Andrew my initial thoughts were Rutherglen and, being an Edinburgh boy, thinking outside the box, Corstorphine.

William

Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Oh wow.  That's brilliant.  I've had this in my file for years - stuck.  And you've sorted it out in a morning.  What a novice I am!  Thank you all very very very much.

Indeed.
I briefly worked from an office on Corstorphine Road, opposite the zoo.

Might that be the Forestry Commission Mike or have you signed the Official Secrets?

Thanks again Millmoor.  I've ordered the marriage certificate so that I can find the information on his parents.  Will re-post when I have it.  Liz
