Maybe it is a boy then...I'm happy to be proved wrong if it helps Cathryn identify the child...she has two options...go for Jim's date estimate and it's a boy...or the website's estimate and it's a girl...but the website link from HP does say "Around 1882" and dating old photos isn't an exact science and there will always be the exception to the rule. The child could be anywhere between 3 & 5 years old...we are only offering our best guess.

Thank you for the various thoughts.

I certainly wasn't casting any criticism!

As I said, I'll have to do some more investigating.  Possibly my great grandfather's family took a trip to Brighton - they don't appear to have been struggling money-wise, but would they have gone there from Blackburn as opposed to Blackpool for what I presume is a seaside holiday?  Maybe there's a girl cousin to one of my great grandparents lurking around who I haven't discovered yet?
