Dating of great gran Edith Stirrup (I think!) as a child
« on: Wednesday 02 November 16 19:44 GMT (UK) »
Could you please date this photo, and also the approximate age of the child.  I think it is possibly a photo of my great grandmother Edith Stirrup (nee Stent).  I've also included a copy of the details from the back.

Many thanks,
Cathryn

Not really my area, but judging by the fairly comprehensive information on this website ... LINK.... it would put it at around 1882. I would say that she was 3-4 years of age.

I have done a minor tweak of this lovely photo...

I would agree about 4 years of age.
The photo is a bit earlier than 1882.
The card makers MIP coded their cards from 1880 & this one isn't. The design is a late 70's style so I would suggest a date of 1878-80 so a child born C.1875/6 I would say.

Hmm...this poses a problem.  I'm assuming the photo is that of a girl.  I thought it might have been Edith, who was born in 1880, and is the only one I know of in the family born around that time.  Her husband was born in 1876 (but surely this isn't a boy??) and he had a sister born in 1878 but she died in 1880. Also, that side of the family lived in Blackburn, whereas Edith's lived in Hampshire.  The link provided by HandyPandy has the back of a carte de viste the same as this one which says it is from around 1882, so I thought I was on the right track with it being Edith.

This child is definitely someone from the family.  We have a photo of my mother taken at about the same age and she is the spitting image right down to the hairstyle (when I first saw this old photo I thought it was my mother in dress up!), and photos of my sister at the same age are also identical.  Some more investigating to do, I think.

It could quite possibly be a boy I think...

I have old family photographs of boys in lace petticoats etc. I think it was quite commonplace until they were about 5 or so.

If it was a boy I would expect the child to be wearing boots and black socks.

Just looked, - and my late Uncle appears to be wearing white socks and white shoes in a pic taken in 1897, when he was 3.
