Help required - Callan Family
« on: Wednesday 02 November 16 19:12 GMT (UK) »
Hopefully someone can point me in the direction i need to be looking?

I am attempting to help my mum with her family tree, I have already started, but i need to locate the marriage of a John McConnell Callan and a Margaret Kerr i believe it may have been in Ayrshire and also unsure of a date...sorry to be vague.

I know that Margaret had a sister called Mary and her parents were called John and Agnes Hay

If anyone else is researching the Callan family tree (Ayrshire/Rothesay), it would be nice to hear from other members.

Thanks in Advance

From the free index at Scotlandspeople - John McConnell Callan married Margaret Gourley Kerr in 1939 in Blytheswood Glasgow. If you register and buy some credits you will be able to view the marriage certificate which will give their ages and name their parents. With this information you should be able to work backwards.

As Isobel has suggested the best thing would be to get a copy of the marriage and see what parent's are listed ...www.scotlandspeople.gov is the best site for searching in Scotland

Did you mean the Ancestry site ? It won't get you much on the Scottish Records where as Scotlands People will ..Did this family originally come from England

Hi Rosie,

The family did move to England in the 1800's then some of them moved back to Scotland, I have traced some of the family, but with it being such a common name, i am having to double check to make sure I've the right family. thanks

I have now found the marriages in question, Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I am now trying to locate all of the children from the marriage of John McConnell Callan and Agnes Callan (Nee Miller)
I have located a John and Ronald, but my mums family talk of an Elizabeth, but i cant see any records on Scotland's people?

And possibly was there others, as they were a big family.

Thanks

This is when it gets harder for searching owing to the statutory records ..it is a lot easier visiting a Scotland's People centre if you live in Scotland ..This looks like the probate record which might help you ..
Miller or Millar or Callan Agnes of 3,Tramore Crescent Prestwick died 1st August 1961 at Ayr ..Confirmation Elizabeth Cullun Paton Somerville and Robert McMillian Gardiner solicitor
Sealed London 18 November

John and Agnes with their son John McConnell Callan ( born 1907) are in Old Luce, Wigtownshire in 1911. I see there is a birth and death of an Agnes in Old Luce in 1909 who may be theirs ( they were the only Callan family in Old Luce in 1911) and Scotlandspeople also has a birth for an Elizabeth in 1919 in Old Luce. I note Ronald appears to have been born in Rothesay in 1915, which is where his grandparents John McConnell Callan  ( born 1847 in Manchester) and Elizabeth Thoms Callan nee Andrews were living in both 1901 and 1911.
