Can I sign up on Rootsweb without beign a member of Ancestry.com?
« on: Friday 28 October 16 21:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I want to be a member of RootsWeb.com. I am really interested in the message boards, I believe they're useful. However, I am not a member of Ancestry... Should I sign up there first?

No if you click on the 'sign in' bit at the top right hand corner of the Rootsweb site you get taken to the sign in or register page.

Just register and off you go.  It's free!

I just registered and posted a query. Is it as active as Rootschat?

No idea Anto, I've never used it myself!

Perhaps others may be able to tell you that.

I've found Rootsweb message boards very helpful in the past.

Forums like Rootschat seem to be more popular these days.

Whatever your area of interest, you just need to get lucky with who has the local knowledge or access to records.

Rootschat all the way - although "Talking Scot" has provided some very helpful responses on the few of my ancestors who come from north of the border - and like Rootschat, it's free and full of well-informed enthusiasts.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Rootsweb is not one single list but a collection of individual lists. Unlike forums such as Rootschat where you sign in to the "parent" forum and may post on all the individual forums each mailing list has to be subscribed to individually.

Mailing list postings have slowed down since the advent of forums but many are still active as may be seen from their archives.
Genbrit for example had around 3000 to 4000 mailings a month in 1998 but in 2016 has less than 100 mailings a month.

Perhaps one of the most useful aspects of the mailing lists are the archives and the ability to search and read the archived postings without subscribing to the list.

Cheers
Guy
