THOMAS POOLEY - c1821 & c1824...Needham Market
« on: Wednesday 26 October 16 13:21 BST (UK) »
I "think" I have come up with a possible Uncle marrying a Niece scenario??
I have 2 x Thomas Pooley's born Needham Market c1821 and c1824.
Thomas Pooley 1821:- I have as single in 1841 Census, cannot find in 1851 nor 1861 Census's, 1871 married to an Eliza Pizz[e]y born c1839 and children, 1881 Census wife as Lizzie bc1839 and children, 1891 Census wife as Elizabeth bc1839,1901 Census as same and died c1903. In 1841 he was a Baker, whilst in the rest he was a Fishmonger.
Thomas Pooley 1824:- I can only find in 1851 and 1861 Census's. In 1842 married an Elizabeth Page  who died in 1850. Therefore 1851 Census declared as Widower with Niece Amelia and Nephew Patrick Pizz[e]y's. In 1861 Census declared as Widower with daughter Amelia and Niece Eliza Pizz[e]y born c1840.
Am I totally of-track here but if the Thomas Pooley's are the same in that all the Census years would be covered, and that the Eliza Pizz[e]y is the same, and there are only 2 Thomas Pooley's and both born Needham Market, and there is only one Eliza Pizz[e]y born 1839 ± 5yrs in Cotton (Bacton Sfk)?. I cannot find a marriage record with a Thomas Pooley marrying an Eliza Pizz[e]y though.
I am very confused as some might be reading this, but any help or pointers would be most welcome
regards

I believe there is just one Thomas Pooley who adjusts his age each census
1841 as you say he was a Baker
1851 I read his occupation as "Confectioner" and his mother in law was with him
1851
Stowplane? St Stowmarket
Thomas Pooley Head w 27 Confectioner Needham
Maria Page mother in law 60 annuitant Iken
Amelia Pizzy neice U  20 Housekeeper Bacton
Patrick Pizzy nephew 8 Bacton
HO107 1794 606 6

1861Broker's shop Stowmarket
Thomas Pooley Head widow er 36 Broker in furniture Needham Market
Isabella daughter s 17 Shopkeeper Stowmarket
Eliza Pizzey neice U 21 Housekeeper Bacton
RG9 1147 120 21

so his daughter was named as Isabella not Amelia
in 1851 I think "Isabella " was named "Arabella Pooley age 7 visitor in household of William Ellest? Pizzy age 45 vet & farmer and wife and children

1871 Ipswich St Stowmarket
Thomas Pooley head M 56 Fishmonger Needham Market
Eliza wife 32 bacton
Fanny daughter 8 Stowmarket
Thomas son 2 Stowmarket
plus a boarder nd a servant
RG10 1734 18 5

1881Thomas is 60 Fishmonger
Lizzie wife 42 Bacton
Fanny daugter 18
Harry son 16
Thomas son 12
William son 6
Katie daughter 3
children allb Stowmarket

1891 -they have moved
7 Broadway Bedford Rd Balham
Thomas Pooley Head M 70 Needham
Elizabeth wife 50 Bacton
Fanny daughter 25 Housekeeper
Harry son 23 Fishmonger
Thomas son 21 Fishmonger
William son 16 Fishmonger
Katie daughter 13 bookkeeper
children b Stowmarket
plus servant

1901
Fox & Hounds Bury St
Thomas Pooley Guest M 80 living on own means Needham
RG13 1762 60 1

1901
Balham Wandsworth
Thomas Pooley head U 30 Fishmonger Stowmarket
Elizabeth mother M 60 Bacton
Fanny daughter U 32 housekeeper
William brother U 26 Fishmonger
Katie sister U 22 Fishmongers bookkeeper
RG13 472 15 21

I know you probably have these census -but some details differed from the one's you had

Have you found 2 baptisms for Thomas Pooley

or does the census follow through as being the same family??

Suz

I looked to see if the children's births were registered as Pooley or Pizzey -and they are Pooley

I cannot finfd a marriage

The best Idea would be to purchase one of the children's birth certs to see mother's maiden name

1851 has Thomas as a widower with MIL Amelia Page - here she is in 1841 with daughter Elizabeth

Maria Page   50
Ellen Page           24
Anna Page   22
Elizabeth Page   20
Phillipina Page   18
Amelia Pezzy   8

1851 names the Pizzey children as Thomas's nephew & niece, In 1841 she could be grandaughter of Maria Page

1861 Thomas still a widower but has daughter Arabella there - In 1851 she is visiting
William Elliston Pizzy    45 and his wife Sarah Ann Pizzy 35 - I think we need to check to see if Sarah Ann was Elizabeth Page's sister  :-\

1851 Thomas has with him Mother in law MARIA Page - neice is Amelia Pizzy

1861 Thomas' daughter is entered as Isabella - 1851 she is Arabella when visiting the Pizzy family

I think her full name was Arabella Phillippa

Rosie do you think there is only one Thomas Pooley??

Thank you Suz - I looked on familysearch  ::)    At least that has linked the Pizzey's to Thomas & Elizabeth nee Page.

Yes I do think there is only one Thomas Pooley.  The second Elizabeth gives years married in the last census, I wonder if 'Fanny' was hers prior to the supposed marriage to Thomas.
