Henry Funston from Londonderry
« on: Tuesday 25 October 16 00:41 BST (UK) »
2nd post.
Does anyone have any information on My great grandfather Mr Henry Funston.
He lived at Hawkin Street, Londonderry. He May or may not have been in the RIC and may have been collecting an RIC pension. He may have been born in 1864 (Census 1911 return). He may have lived at Patrick street Londonderry before Hawkin Street Londonderry.

Thanks in advance.

A special thanks to both aghadowey and JJen for their contributions on my previous post- they were very helpful.

Kind regards Samuel Boggs

The Henry Funston in the census returns married Elizabeth Jane Kennedy on 16 June 1891 in Monellan Church, his father was also called Henry Funston, a shopkeeper, hers was called Andrew Kennedy, a farmer, here is a view of the original registration:

Apart from the children you can see in the 1901 and 1911 census returns, Henry Funston and Elizabeth Jane Kennedy also had a son on 23 February 1902 called Robert Mellon Funston, note that middle name:

Henry Funston's birthplace as stated in the 1901 and 1911 census returns was County Tyrone.  While I can't see a civil birth registration for Henry (it was  possibly pre- civil registration), there are several civil birth registrations  for children who are possible siblings of Henry, as the parents are recorded as Henry Funston and Rebecca Mellon.  For example, here is a daughter Eliza born in 1866:

That would read across to this family in the 1901 census:

The Henry Funston in the above census return died in 1901 with a reported age of 73:

The PRONI Wills Calendar Index has the following  Administration entry:

Administration of the estate of Henry Funston late of Clonelly County Fermanagh Retired Land Steward who died 12 June 1901 at Banagh in said County granted at Armagh to Elizabeth Funston Spinster.

By browsing through the Valuation Revision Books you should be able to get a rough idea of when Henry Funston lived at a particular address-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Griffith's Valuation shows both a Henry Funston in Gortnagross and a John Mellon in Magheranageeragh.
