Family Tree Maker help please

Its been a long time since I last posted as my research is slowing down a bit. Have been doing it for a few years you know!!

I am looking to buying a new pc as this is abt 15yrs old. Its Windows xp. The problem is that I have masses of info on FTM files and want to transfer it over to my new pc when I get one. However it seems this is nearly defunct so may not be able to install FTM on windows 10, is that right? Should I download new software from another site and can I then export FTM to that. Which would you suggest.

I really would hate to lose it. It seems FTM is supported by ancestry which they are going to withdraw, but if I'm only using the pages does it affect this?

As you can tell I'm not up with techno.

Thanks for the pointer to the very lenghty topic. Have managed to plough through a few pages. To cut it short, I am not subscribed to Ancestry and my FTM disc is 2005 version, so was just wondering if it will work on windows 10. All I would need to do is view my family views and add more info as required.

Save your info from FTM onto an external hard drive or flash drive as a Gedcom.
Ask for the lastest FTM as a Christmas present. I believe these usually come with a free subscription to Ancestry.
Set up the FTM on your new computer.
Register with Ancestry and up load the Gedcom to that.
Download it to the new FTM. That way it will sync with Ancestry and you will have a back up. You can still see the tree even when your subscription runs out.

FTM 2005 works just fine with Windows 10. That is exactly what I am using.
I wouldn't be able to vouch for the Ancestry link, as that is the part I don't use. But as you've said you don't need that, no problem.

I have a new Laptop, bought in Feb (I think), scared to use it as it's W10.

I have FTM 2006 so that should work too?

Should I download new software from another site and can I then export FTM to that. Which would you suggest.

If I were you, I would do what I did, bought FTM on Disk which I can install on any computer anywhere (well so far) & fill it in as I go.
I have it on my home comp & my laptop.
I upload whichever tree I'm working from USB & can save it back to USB & take away which means I don't need to be "online" to add to my tree etc.

I'm using ftm 2006 which I upgraded to ftm 2012 but I have both original discs.

I find when upgrading to a new version of windows, or a new computer (laptop) that there is no problem with ftm if I proceed as follows.

Save a current version of your ftm files to a flash drive.

Insert the original ftm discs in the appropriate order i.e. for me that is ftm 2006 followed by ftm 2012 and then upload the saved version of your current family tree from the flash drive.

It hasn't worked if I simply put the 2012 version on my new laptop as that is an upgrade - you need to go back to the original and then the upgrades as you would actually have done originally.

Bit of a problem if you haven't got the original discs.

Thanks folks, will have to sort out a new pc soon. Have downloaded a free version of Legacy family tree but doesn't look as good or easy as FTM. Hopefully I will be able to still use FTM later.
