Hi Rootschat members! Not been on for some time but really need your help.... unusual one but I am trying to re unite a clock with any relative of Benjamin Phillips  Christened 26 June 1826 Bockleton, Worc. An inscription on the clock indicates that it was given to him by work colleagues on leaving his employ May1877 whilst working as a Bailiff at Grafton Farm, Bockleton. I am in possession of said clock after it was passed to my grandmother following a house clearance after his death in the parish of Shipton Moyne Glos. I have him in 1841(Bockleton, Worcestershire) 1851 (Bockleton), 1871 (Bockleton), 1891 (Shipton Moyne, Glos), 1901 (Shipton Moyne)and 1911(Shipton Moyne) Census's. I am curious to know where he was in 1861 and 1881. It would appear that his father John and mother Mary Anne ran/owned the 250 acre Grafton Farm, Bockleton and employed their youngest son, Benjamin, as Bailiff. Any help as always gratefully received.

Have persisted with some of the research of my own and have now established the whereabouts of Benjamin in 1861 and 1881. Later in life when living in Shipton Moyne and after the death of his first wife Maria, Benjamin married Anne Elizabeth Caple 8 May 1893 in Bitton, Glos. She was noted with Benjamin in the 1901 Census but by 1911 Benjamin was again on his own... I am trying therefore to establish when Anne (Annie in 1901 Census)died. Have tried FreeBMD but cant seem to find it there... again any help gratefully received.

Benjamin died 1915 but if you were looking for a death for Ann between 1901 - 1911 you would not have found one as she was still alive in 1911 and 22yrs younger than Benjamin so could have died a long time after 1911 or even remarried after his death in 1915

if you are looking to reunite his descendants with the clock - shouldn't you be tracing his children/grandchildren through the various censuses/BMD records etc?

Thankyou Carole for your response, and correcting my assertion that Benjamin was widowed twice. Will now have another look to see if I can determine whether Annie married again after Benjamin's death. Could be tricky!  :o

Hi Annie E might have remaried after Bejamind death but she was 52 in the 1911 census and states no children so she won't have have any at the age of 52! Also doesn't look like Benjamin had any children with Maria either- Benjamin himself appears to be one of 8 children so think that's where a living relative might be?
Good luck
Claire

Hi Robincrook, my name is Bill Phillips, I am the Great, Great, Great Grandson of Robert Phillips who was Benjamin's older Brother.  Robert and his Brother William, came to Australia in 1851 and the family has flourished since that time.  Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the rest of the family who remained behind in Bockleton, with only one line continuing and unfortunately it is not Benjamin's.  Benjamin's first wife was much older than him, and there were no children.  His second wife was much younger and again there were no children.  A cousin of mine has travelled to the UK many times to do extensive research on the family that remained in England, and I know she would be thrilled to have just a photo of the clock if you find anyone closer in the UK to give it to.  I contacted her today and she is going through all her information on Benjamin, so that we can shed a little more light on his story for you.  I will be in touch again with more....   Bill Phillips
