Given how common the Nic(h)olson name, you would likely have to sit at one of the main genealogy centres and go quickly through all the options, including being able to view those entries past the online cut off. You may have already done this?

Clarkston was/in in Cathcart district I think. There is one marriage there in 1943. But, he could have married anywhere...

Yes, you definitely need to order documents in advance if they are stored off-site. They cannot be ordered and produced the same day.
