Gerty's Husband
« on: Monday 17 October 16 20:49 BST (UK) »
I have another question.  I've attached another photo of the groom, the one from 1931 that I mentioned earlier http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=757628.0  As you can see, he is in uniform without the stripes.  Above, in the wedding photograph, he had two stripes on his RAF uniform.  As he did not have stripes in the 1931 photograph, does this suggest that he was a lower rank at that point?  If he had already had had two stripes, would the 1931 uniform have had them on it.

He has no rank showing so he could be an AC (Aircraftman) 1st or second class - 2nd class the lowest, or an LAC (Leading Aircraftman). After he'd gone through those 3 ranks he would become a Cpl  (corporal) and wear the chevrons he had at his marriage. The promotions would take several years. I cannot put a time frame on the promotions as I have no idea of how it worked in those days or what trade he did.

I know he's not aircrew of any type, medical or dental, he's not a sparks, these all have badges of some kind. Doubt he would be police due to lack of rank and having to wear the sentry sash.

Hope this helps  :)

Thanks medpat!  Would he need to achieve one stripe before moving onto the two?  If that is the case, would one stripe be for LAC?  The photo had 'taken aboard the Dorsetliner October 1931 Port Sudan Africa' written on the back.  I find it curious that he had a photo taken by a boat when he was in the RAF?  Any thoughts?

Thank you all for your help.  In response to the bride having a wedding dress it's because I think this was a pre WWII photo; I believe the groom was a career military man.  I have found a photo of him dated 1931 in Sudan so I believe that this photo was pre WWII.
How can you tell the difference between an army and RAF uniform and the rank according to the stripes?  I would like to learn a little more about this if anyone would be able to tell me?   :)

I thought the ladies hat in the background looked more 40s style than 30s...but I could be wrong.
You may want to post a link to this topic on the Armed Forces Board.

1 stripe is lance corporal in the army. Did you note the uniform change in the 2 pictures, think the change was about 1933 but am not good on uniform history.

In those days the first rank that you wore on the arm in the RAF was corporal. He would get more pay for each rank going up though.

These days ranks have altered slightly and its AC as you join up with no badge, then LAC (leading aircraftman) with a 2 blade propeller badge and SAC (senior aircraftman) with a 3 blade propeller, then corporal. There is a technical rank in between these days as well.

Today's ranks http://www.raf.mod.uk/organisation/ranks.cfm

For the transport - remember flying was still in it's relative early days and getting men in large numbers around the world would be easier by ship. There would be other RAF and army personnel being taken to Egypt and perhaps the ship would then carry on to India, Middle East or Far East. There was a huge Royal Navy at the time and civilian ships were also charted for troop movements.  Regiments get posted together whereas RAF personnel are posted individually so he might find himself on a ship full of army and very few RAF aboard.

The large transport planes were a thing of the future - Sunshine Airlines (RAF joke) for transporting people around the world was also in the future. In fact Transport Command didn't come into being until 1943.

The Royal Air Force came into existence in 1918 so will soon be 100 years old. There may be lots written about it's history then, there may also be programmes on the TV if you are in UK.

Thank you Tommy, that was very kind of you.
Also, thank you medpad; I must admit that I didn't have an interest in military history/uniform before but you are peaking my interest!  I'm going to look into this further as I am in the UK.  I now have questions about my grandfather who served in WWII in the Navy and I will explore this further in the Armed Forces board as Treetotal mentioned.
Thank you everyone again for your input!   :D
