Many thanks dobfarm and Ruskie!  Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been away on holiday for a couple of weeks.  Your information, pinpoints where Workhouse Hill was/is.
Dobfarm, I would be interested to know where you obtained the map you posted.  I have scoured the NLS site which, as you probably know, has an extensive offering of old maps, but I could not find Workhouse Hill on any.

Find the word HORSFORTH in large big BLACK Letters on the map

Above the TH in Horsforth go straight up the map to the first horizontal faint dotted line: then compare map with the one map I posted.
