My family lived in Waterloo and Seaforth . What address have you got?
You could search for a death record for him on Freebmd

If he did not receive a pension it is unlikely that his record was kept. A pity as records of this period are likely to have details of his wife and children.

You should however find him in the musters. The last one for the 3rd Hussars is 1888, - possibly up to end of March 1888. It is in the National Archives. It is not online.

If you find him you can work backwards until you find his enlistment.

Does he appear on any census, with or without family after marriage or before marriage?

What year was John born? (If he gave an age on his marriage certificate, you will be able to estimate).

What year did your 3xgreat grandmother marry again? What was her name?

We need more details - as you can imagine there are numerous John Flanagans in Lancashire.

Can I just clarify something? You said his father's name is John Carpenter? Is that John Carpenter Flanagan, or is Carpenter his surname? OR is the father's name John Flanagan and his Occupation is Carpenter? :-\

Hi Scouser are you sure you have the right family as it seems strange that John James Flanagan married Elizabeth Bowen 1887.. Then Elizabeth marries William Edwards 1898 says she is a spinster ..Marriage for a John Flanagan to Annie Langan 21st  April 1889 ???..  Do you have the details of who the daughter married ?
