Isaac Moses b. 1798 Wolsingham
« on: Saturday 08 October 16 12:19 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking into the Moses family from Durham, I have traced back to Isaac Moses born abt 1798 in Wolsingham. Died Hartlepool 1877. Marriage Mary Meggison/Meggeson 1821 Houghton Le Spring.

Children:
John b. abt 1821 Stanhope
Jane b. abt  1822 Houghton Le Spring
Isaac b.  abt 1824 Stanhope
William Meggison (Moses) b. abt 1824 Houghton Le Spring
George b. abt 1829 West Rainton
Mary Ann b. 1831 Stanhope
Lively b. 1833, died same year
Hannah b. 5 March 1837, died Keighley (W Yorks) 1880. Spouse John Martin
Thomas b. abt 1838 Stanhope
Ralph b. abt 1842 Stanhope
Thomas b. abt 1838 Stanhope
Featherston b. abt 1845 Stanhope
Sarah b. abt 1847 Stanhope.

I have the descendants but I am struggling to get any further with Isaac and any help with the Moses family from the area would be great, I know that there are links between a Moses family in Fenton Cumberland but not sure if this is the same family. These links are dated around the 1730's.

Thanks.

Long shot but if you search for the surname in the pre 1858 wills index and then check out the wills (there are links to images on Family Search), there 'may' be a mention of the people you are looking for in amongst the beneficiaries.

Are you sure you have the year of birth right?

There are two different Isaac Moses on the census.  The one with the children you have named was born Stanhope c1891 1791 according to the 1851 census, and this is probably his baptism:

I think you also have the wrong marriage.

Isaac Moses married Mary Featherstone 02 Jan 1819 at Stanhope & I see that they named one of their children Featherstone.

Hi Thankyou. I am sure you're correct with the Mary Featherstone marriage, I thought it was a bit odd having so many children and I've obviously got the 2 mixed up.

Also it was 1789 birth not 1798. I'm having another look now.

Thanks.

Easily done - I have fat fingers so I'm always hitting the wrong letters & numbers on the keypad (have amended my first post accordingly!).

The Isaac born Wolsingham was b 1798, whereas the Isaac born Stanhope was b 1789.   He seems to have stayed in the Stanhope area and died there in 1851.

I think I'm getting it sorted now, when I've looked I have both lots of censuses for both Isaacs so have put them back as they should be.

I'll have a look at the pre 1858 wills to see if there is any mention of him, he was a lead miner so maybe he didn't make one.

Thanks again.

As you are looking to go backwards from Isaac, I suggested the wills in case one mentions him as a beneficiary (to help to confirm who his parents were) rather than his own will - which would be an really interesting find but probably wouldn't help you to go backwards
