One of our Goodwins is missing
« on: Friday 07 October 16 10:34 BST (UK) »
Hello
I had a bit of surprise looking at the 1911 census for David Goodwin born 1855 and  his wife Jane Elizabeth nee Coates born 1856 .All the family were there but you guessed it the fertility bit there is a fourth child still alive.
Now there's been no mention of a fourth child and as the other children are in their 20's it seems a bit odd no one mentioned him or her.
Looking at the other children's births it looks like the missing child was born  between July 1879-Nov 1884.
I've whittled it down to 5 in Macclesfield.
Can any one else do better before I start sending for certificates

Isaac Sep 1880
Harold Sep 1882
Harry Warren Sep 1882
Edwin Sep 1883
Charles Mar 1884.

The younger daughters (Ethel Grace and Nora Maud),are baptised at Disley but no sign of elder brother Norman so I'm assuming he was christened at St Thomas High Lane which isn't on line.

Any help appreciated

 Norman Coates Goodwin born 1879
married 1907
to Mary Taylor
he would not be at home on 1911

You didn't mention him?

My guess is look at burials locally

No, I think you are on the right track

1901
David Goodwin 46 schoolmaster bn Norbury
Jane Elizabeth 45 bn Ashton
Norman Coates 21 Bankers clerk
Ethel Grace 16
Nora Maud 14

Seems to be the same as the 1911 family - Norman there, but not Edith!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

1891 Norman 11
Ethel Grace  6
Nora Maud  4

1901 Norman  21
Ethel Grace 16
Nora Maud  14

Norman married 1907

Have you looked for baptisms for the 5 listed as possibles?

If you look on CheshireBMD you will find that the 3 children you know for definite are registered under Cheshire East, sub-District Rainow.  Unfortunately there are a number of birth registrations for Goodwins in that sub-District during the intervening years, and Cheshire East does not include mother's maiden name  :'(  :'(

As there is no sign of the fourth child in any of the census returns, could it be that he/she has a disability and is not at home?
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi
Yes bumble bee that's what I thought.
I've looked for baptisms for the 5 I have but no luck and while some appear on the 1939 census ,some do not .And the ones that do appear of course only have a date of birth and there are Goodwins with the same first name born elsewhere.
Harry Warren Goodwin for instance should stick out as a sore thumb but nothing,no school,no baptism ,no marriage and no death, but of course there are simple Henry Goodwin and Harry Goodwins out there.
But thanks for the sub district bit .I'll have a closer look at that.

I wondered about Harry Warren because he is the only one with a middle name, normally families either use them or don't. Also it's a surname (potentially) like the other boy's middle name.
