Battersea Churches
« on: Wednesday 05 October 16 22:01 BST (UK) »
I am researching my great-grandfather Samuel Perry who lived in Battersea from about 1860 to 1905. I know that in 1879 he was living at 32 Bolingbroke Road, Church Rd, Battersea. Samuel spent time in the workhouse after being found abandoned, on these records his denomination is CofE yet he married in 1885 with an Independent ceremony (Harley Street Chapel, Bow). I want to try and work out where he may have worshipped but have no idea where to start.

It is clear Samuel has a deep personal faith and he threw himself into community work. I know from a letter of his to the workhouse that he became a Sunday school teacher and his church started a Band of Hope (now Hope Uk), in which he held three or four positions of responsibility.

Can anybody share some advice on Battersea churches during this period or where the best place is for me to find further information?

Thank you for the tips.

I have found baptism records for his children. Two were baptised at St Mary, Battersea; one at St Stephen, Battersea; and one at St John, Hoxton, Hackney.

These records of course confirm his denomination as Church of England.
