Thank you very much, finding a John Hood & Sarah Hood attending the 1783 Quaker Marriage of Abel Chapman of Whitby, Master Mariner, to Elizabeth Simpson, Daughter of Wakefield Simpson of Whitby, at the Meeting House in Stainton-dale.


Thanks dobfarm, I just feel with the "Not in Membership" burial in the Selby Quaker Burial Ground of George Hood of Selby and George Hood's Quaker contacts with Jonathan Hutchinson; William Procter and William Massey all of Selby, there must be some Quaker link somewhere.

This particular Abel Chapman (quote above) is in a Tree (I say this because there are several Abel in this very extensive Tree)!

On the far Left bottom row of first Tree extract attached and numbered 1. ...

In 1783 Abel Chapman of Stakesby Hall, Whitby, Yorkshire, married Elizabeth Daughter of Wakefield Simpson, Esq., and he was the Son of John Chapman of Whitby Esq., and Jane Mellar, Daughter of John Mellar, Esq., of Whitby.


In the second attachment the Brother of Abel Chapman, being Edward Chapman, Esq., Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant, in 1794 married Martha dau of Thomas Holt, Esq., of Whitby, following this line downward to 2. is John Mellar Chapman who in 1832 married Caroline Sarah Parker and according to this her Father was an old acquaintance of ours ...

Samuel Walker Parker of Scott's House, County Durham.


In 1829 John Lionel Hood of Newcastle upon Tyne married Mary Parker, another daughter of Samuel Walker Parker, at St Cuthbert's Scotland (Register not attached), see snippet.


So going back to the 1783 marriage in the quote, by 1832 these characters are all related by Marriage.

George Hood of Selby enters into a property arrangement in 1836 with Lord Petre and has William Procter, William Massey and Jonathan Hutchinson it would seem as Trustees.

Been looking at the Will of William Procter of Selby, the part written in 1846 and Proved 1855 and Widow Hood [Sarah Hood] instead of living in a property owned by her late husband George Hood, Cooper, Tanner and Brewer, at Selby, Widow Hood is living in a house owned by William Procter and Wife Elizabeth.

So a few days ago, I thought I need to get to grips with the final few of those living on "Hood's Yard", Gowthorpe, Selby, and neighbors' that I had not looked at.


In 1832 Mrs Elizabeth Procter of Selby, becomes related to the family of John Lionel HOOD of Newcastle upon Tyne.

I will explain the remainder, hopefully tomorrow, as a 2nd part to this reply.

Elizabeth Slinger who married William Procter of Selby

Unfortunately I could only get a short Quaker Marriage Certificate online (which does not show relations), so had to resort to slightly devious means to get her relatives.

Marriage at the Assembly of Quakers at Stockton on Tees, 27th Day of the 6th Month 1825

William Procter of Selby in the County of York Merchant Son of Thomas Procter of the same place and Mary his Wife, and Elizabeth Slinger Daughter of Tempest Slinger of Dagenham in the County of Essex and Johannah his Wife.

Fortunately his Will was registered as a PCC Will and quickly obtainable.

The Will confirmed he was a church clerk, name of his Widow Johannah and two Daughters Mary and Elizabeth Slinger and a suggestion of a link to Stockton on Tees.

An interesting Affirmation was recorded and had been made by Henry Richardson of Stockton on Tees, County Durham, that I am a Dissenter from the Church of England commonly called a Quaker and that Henry Richardson was well acquainted with the Rev Tempest Slinger late of Dagenham Essex and well acquainted with his handwriting and believes it to be the proper handwriting of the last Will and Testament of Tempest Slinger.

Admon with the Will attached was Granted to Johannah Slinger the Widow the Relict and universal Legatee.

Although a handful of people are knocking about in England with the name of Tempest Slinger, I could now see Tempest Slinger was not a Quaker, but the family obviously had Quaker links.

But no relations stated like in a Quaker Marriage!

Their ages on the Licence (from a transcription) give Johannah Thornhill a Birth year about 1749.

Then I thought, I wonder if she had a Brother or Sister who had a Quaker marriage and has an accessible Full Quaker marriage entry online, which give relations.

One of the subscription sites had not imaged the most important page of the Quaker Marriage, those present and their "Relations", so I tried the other site.

Richard Thornhill of Whitby married and the certificate confirmed he was the Son of Joseph Thornhill of Hinderwell and his Wife Mary, And
Jane Scarth daughter of Isaac Scarth late of Whitby aforesaid Merchant & Eleanor his Wife both deceased.

Also confirms Scarth, Gaskin and Abel Chapman of Whitby, also Mellar and Gaskin, are related by marriages.


Elizabeth Procter of Selby (Nee Slinger)
Elizabeth Procter (Nee Slinger) who married William Procter of Selby in 1825 has an extensive family and was related to Abel Chapman of Whitby and therefore once the Chapman Family of Whitby link was made to Samuel Walker Parker of Scott's House in 1832, that means they were related to John Lionel Hood of Newcastle upon Tyne, by Marriages.


Unfortunately, it does nothing to give any more background proof of George Hood of Selby!


But as Widow Hood was living in one of William Procter's houses at Selby in 1846 and William had been involved in the purchase by George Hood in 1836 (because Hood needed Trustees it seems), probably because it was former Manor property, I just had to see who Elizabeth Procter (nee Slinger) was related too.


What is interesting, is the identity of John Hood and Sarah Hood, present at the 1783 marriage of Abel Chapman of Whitby and a few suggestions in the past, have been made.


Added:
I suspect several Esthill are there in the 1762 audience because the INGRAM surname features in the Chapman of Whitby Strand Tree. One of the Esthill was called Ingram Esthill and was at the 1762 Marriage.


One suggestion was John Hood of Scarborough and Sarah Hammond who married in 1778, at St Giles in the Fields, Middlesex, England.


Another interesting note was the Outhet surname in the attachment, I have the surname Outhart in the 1826 Marriage when William Hood [born Lutton] married Jane Outhart, but it easy to make coincidences when so much stuff has been kept for over 30 plus years.


Also in a Scarborough Will of Ann Spruce, Proved 1797 a Jane Outhart is mentioned, Wife of Francis Outhart of Scalby, Farmer, who was added on to the Will to be left a Clock.

Ann Spruce was mentioned in a Spencer of Scarborough, Will, a Spencer who could possibly be Maudland Hood's relative.
