I wonder if Jane Hood buried aged 65 in Selby 1803 wife of John Hood mariner - married John Hood abroad and he brought her back to England.

Thanks, I did look, but records are still being added.

GRO also has some pre 1837 Events abroad held as "Overseas Records" and relate to Deaths back to 1761.


I even wonder if they were a Common Law couple. There was another couple like this at Selby in the newspaper and only married before their deaths.

Mr Benjamin Gell, Brewer, of Selby, aged 74 (1849 31st March Leeds Intelligencer) and when he died his Estate went to the Court of Chancery in 1851 Turner v. Lang reference to Master Richards. (Case Not Seen)

I remember going to Bass Brewery as a Visitor and was taken to their Bar and had some beer brewed from Corn and it was some good stronger ale! 

They asked us if anyone would like to hold this monthly cheque to the Inland Revenue for £16,000,000 (millions), so I put my hand up held it and said I'd prefer cash (heard laughter).

It was probably from the period when cheques were returned after being presented and paid.


There was a Cook family at Snaith, Yorks, where only the first child was baptised according to a later Will.


There was one Anabaptist Family at Selby in a non-conformist Survey for Selby, but it only lists the faith name and number of families, but Surnames were not listed.

I am led to believe Anabaptists don't Baptise, nor do all Nonconformists.

Catholics, Quakers and Jews had no involvement with the Parish Church.

But a marriage for a Lord Petrie family member, was reported as having a Service at a Catholic Church, then by the Church of England the following day.


I noticed for some odd reason in the late 1700s that the Bishop of Sodor and Man (Isle of Man) came under York, England.

The Archdeaconry of Nottingham came under York, but nothing in those Hood of Nottingham Wills Proved at York for the time period.

Talking of Archdeaconry, and thinking of George Hood of Selby say he was born in Yorkshire on the 1841 census, there are pockets of Yorkshire in Lancashire around Clitheroe, Rochdale and Lees near Oldham. This was around the time of the Archdeaconry of Richmond and Craven (Skipton area)

My relative is, John Robinson, who married Jane the Daughter of John Brigham.

These marriages are in my wider Tree and John Robinson is the ancestor Robertson alias Robinson [and his daughter Jane born Arram 1806] married [Thomas] Stephenson of Tickton [in 1832], that my late Grandmother told me about.

It took me 5 years to work out where and how the three surnames fitted:- John Robertson and John Robinson were actually the same person, it was the vicar or clerk writing John Robertson in the Marriage Register, but he actually signed John Robinson by his hand :-

We also have a John Robson Hotham as a witness at a more recent family marriage.

John Robson Hotham was baptised 1817 Son of Thomas Hotham & Mary (nee Brigham) of North Newbald, Farmer. Married 1816 at Bishop Burton by Licence and their ages were given.

The 1851 Census confirms Thomas Hotham was born North Dalton and Mary Hotham was born Bishop Burton and the visitor was Elizabeth Wilson 21 born Sculcoates Hall.

Jonah Marshall was named in the 1763 John Brigham, Marriage Settlement amongst the Hotham Family of Scorborough & South Dalton documents


Descendants of Maudland Turner (nee Maudland Hood of Selby) are related by several marriages to Grub, Shoe Maker and Cordwainer of Etton, but George Hood who married Sarah Russell in 1815 has no specific link to John Hood, Mariner of Selby (Father of Maudland) and the mystery Jane Hood buried 1803 at Selby, Yorks.

But I am related by other marriages to the same Grub Family of Etton that Maudland Turner's family married into.

One of those applying for Probate regarding Robert Day, late of Brough in the East Riding of Yorkshire who died on 29th July 1864.

The four lower images of Hotham of South Dalton, numbered 5, 6, 7 & 8 should adjoin each other side by side (5. on the left ... ).

2) Maudland TURNER (nee Hood) at Selby, Yorks, her eldest Brother-in-Law, was John TURNER, bapt South Kirkby, Yorkshire 1760 and John TURNER's descendants were BECKETT, etc.

Hello All

My distant relatives are John Robinson and Jane Brigham, who married in 1788 at North Cave and these are also mentioned in a summary of a Will, listed in the Hotham Family of Scorborough and South Dalton catalogue handlist (Hull History Centre).

However, their 1788 marriage does not seem to feature in the Hotham of South Dalton printed Tree (lower 4 parts attached the other day), despite the Will mentioning them being in the Hotham of South Dalton documents collection.

At another distant family Marriage of mine a John Robson Hotham, was a witness.

The parents of John Robson Hotham, were Thomas Hotham of North Newbald [born North Dalton] & Mary Brigham of Cherry Burton, who married in 1816.

His Grandparents were likely John Hotham and Jane Robson, who married 1774 at North Dalton, Yorkshire.


COOK, Witness
The COOK (witness) is missing in the B.T. Copy and he or she does not appear elsewhere in the Parish Register opening, nor on the adjacent pages.


Any ideas on the Cook at the wedding please? I thought of Frances or Francis, but looks like it starts with a letter, then a full stop?

I don't think finding this COOK is going to help me with George Hood of Selby (married 1815), nor the mystery Jane Hood (buried Selby 1803). It will just likely broaden those in my wider Tree.

I will see if the Archive can look at the original Cook signature too.
