Hi Mark,

I wonder if Jane Hood buried aged 65 in Selby 1803 wife of John Hood mariner - married John Hood abroad and he brought her back to England.

Just a thought!

Dave
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Thanks, I did look, but records are still being added.

GRO also has some pre 1837 Events abroad held as "Overseas Records" and relate to Deaths back to 1761.

I even wonder if they were a Common Law couple. There was another couple like this at Selby in the newspaper and only married before their deaths.

 ----------

Amended (see addition at bottom):
Mr Benjamin Gell, Brewer, of Selby, aged 74 (1849 31st March Leeds Intelligencer) and when he died his Estate went to the Court of Chancery in 1851 Turner v. Lang reference to Master Richards. (Case Not Seen)

See also Leeds Mercury 9th & 21st Feb'y 1850 Sale of House and Malt Chamber in Gowthorpe, Selby.

1841 Census Selby
Benjamin Gell, 65, Corn Brewer
Mary Lang 30
Ann Lang, 9 months.

I remember going to Bass Brewery as a Visitor and was taken to their Bar and had some beer brewed from Corn and it was some good stronger ale!  ;D

They asked us if anyone would like to hold this monthly cheque to the Inland Revenue for £16,000,000 (millions), so I put my hand up held it and said I'd prefer cash (heard laughter).

It was probably from the period when cheques were returned after being presented and paid.

There was a Cook family at Snaith, Yorks, where only the first child was baptised according to a later Will.

There was one Anabaptist Family at Selby in a non-conformist Survey for Selby, but it only lists the faith name and number of families, but Surnames were not listed.

I am led to believe Anabaptists don't Baptise, nor do all Nonconformists.

Catholics, Quakers and Jews had no involvement with the Parish Church.

Added:
But a marriage for a Lord Petrie family member, was reported as having a Service at a Catholic Church, then by the Church of England the following day.

I noticed for some odd reason in the late 1700s that the Bishop of Sodor and Man (Isle of Man) came under York, England.

The Archdeaconry of Nottingham came under York, but nothing in those Hood of Nottingham Wills Proved at York for the time period.

Mark

Added:

Lang was the Daughter of Benjamin Gell of Selby.

Leeds Evening Express, 25th June 1869
LANG.-May 23rd, at Liverpool, Nova Scotia, B.N.A., aged 35, John Gell Lang, grandson of the late Benj. Gell, brewer, Selby.

Talking of Archdeaconry, and thinking of George Hood of Selby say he was born in Yorkshire on the 1841 census, there are pockets of Yorkshire in Lancashire around Clitheroe, Rochdale and Lees near Oldham. This was around the time of the Archdeaconry of Richmond and Craven (Skipton area)

Hello

Thank you Dave

My Family Tree research and documents indicate that I am very distantly related by Marriages to Samuel Hood, Baron Bridport.

I can also confirm this from a Catalogue summary of this Will ...

U-DDHO Papers of the Hotham Family of Scorborough and South Dalton

1763

U DDHO/30/26

Added: Just noticed that when John Brigham of Etton, married in 1763 Mary Woodmancy, at Cherry Burton, Yorkshire (in my Tree) that Jonah Marshall (mentioned in the Marriage Settlement catalogue description) was also present as a marriage witness.

1797

U DDHO/30/27

Copy. Will of John Brigham.
Bequests to daughters Elizabeth, Jane, wife of John Robinson, & Mary Edrington, & son John.
1 item

My relative is, John Robinson, who married Jane the Daughter of John Brigham.

These marriages are in my wider Tree and John Robinson is the ancestor Robertson alias Robinson [and his daughter Jane born Arram 1806] married [Thomas] Stephenson of Tickton [in 1832], that my late Grandmother told me about.

It took me 5 years to work out where and how the three surnames fitted:- John Robertson and John Robinson were actually the same person, it was the vicar or clerk writing John Robertson in the Marriage Register, but he actually signed John Robinson by his hand :-

North Cave, 3rd January 1788
John Robertson (signed John Robinson) 23 yrs
Jane Brigham 19 yrs
In the Presence of James Storey & Isaac Dawson

John Robson Hotham at a Family Marriage
We also have a John Robson Hotham as a witness at a more recent family marriage.

John Robson Hotham was baptised 1817 Son of Thomas Hotham & Mary (nee Brigham) of North Newbald, Farmer. Married 1816 at Bishop Burton by Licence and their ages were given.

The 1851 Census confirms Thomas Hotham was born North Dalton and Mary Hotham was born Bishop Burton and the visitor was Elizabeth Wilson 21 born Sculcoates Hall.

Site of Sculcoates Hall Today
I am informed that a Fire Station stands on the site of the old Sculcoates Hall of 1818.

Samuel Hood
By a lot of marriages we are related to:-

1853 St George Hanover Square, 10th December
Charles Hotham K.C.B., Son of Frederick Hotham, Hon: ble, married
Jane Sarah Holbech, Widow, of Wimpole Street, Daughter of Samuel Hood, Baron Bridport.

Added:
There are 8 panes (4 upper & 4 lower to the Dalton Family) Lower Far Left 1 and 2 are attached

My late Grandmother (from all those years ago when I was a boy) has got me involved in something now, I cannot see where those in the 1797 Will fit?

The Bridport Hood family are on Far Left 1

Lower 3 & Lower 4 Hotham of South Dalton.

 ---------------

The following are in my Tree, but see update later today.

1763 John Brigham of Etton marrying Mary Woodmansy (B.T. looks like Mary Woodmancy) at Cherry Burton, Yorkshire.
In the Presence of Joseph Nicholson ; Jonah Marshall

Jonah Marshall was named in the 1763 John Brigham, Marriage Settlement amongst the Hotham Family of Scorborough & South Dalton documents

Descendants of Maudland Turner (nee Maudland Hood of Selby) are related by several marriages to Grub, Shoe Maker and Cordwainer of Etton, but George Hood who married Sarah Russell in 1815 has no specific link to John Hood, Mariner of Selby (Father of Maudland) and the mystery Jane Hood buried 1803 at Selby, Yorks.

But I am related by other marriages to the same Grub Family of Etton that Maudland Turner's family married into.

Regarding, John Robson Hotham, late of Seaton Ross, but now of Meltonby ...

One of those applying for Probate regarding Robert Day, late of Brough in the East Riding of Yorkshire who died on 29th July 1864.

1876
HOTHAM.-January 1, at Meltonby Hall, Pocklington, in his 59th year, John Robson Hotham. - No cards.

Bit late for cards now anyway.

 ---------------

Arram was in the Parish and Registers of Leckonfield / Leconfield, Yorkshire.

In 1867 John Robinson died at North Cave on 1st June (per Will Calendar), but buried Leconfield Yorkshire ...
Leckonfield 1867 John Robinson, Abode - Cave, buried June 5th, age 79, by Robert Whitaker, Rector of Scorborough.

Leckonfield Census 1851
John Robinson, Head, Wid'r, 82, Farm 170 acres emp 3 Lab, born Yorkshire, North Cave.
John Robinson, Son, U, 60, Farmer's Son, born Yorkshire, North Cave.
Thomas Robinson, Son, U, 40, Farmer's Son, born Yorkshire, Arram.
Rachel Suddaby, Serv, U, 42, House Keeper, born Yorkshire, Aldbro
3 other Servants (mentioned Rachel Suddaby because there is a mention to a Suddaby in the 1867 Will Calendar / Index

Further down Census page
Robert Robinson, Head, Mar, 41, Farmer 60 acres empl 1 Lab, born Yorkshire, Arram.
John Thomas Robinson, Son, 2, born Yorkshire, Arram.
2 other Servants in the household on the bottom of that Census page.

The above John Thomas Robinson was born 1848, Mother, Elizabeth nee Watson. Her Father was given as Thomas Watson, with a Ridgers Watson and James [?] present at the Robert Robinson and Elizabeth Watson 1845 marriage.

1841 Census Leckonfield
Arram
John Robinson, 75, Farmer, Y.
John Robinson, 50,              , Y.
Thomas Robinson, 35,        , Y.
Robert Robinson, 30,           , Y.
William Robinson, 12,          , Y.
Rachel Suddaby, 35, F. S.    , Y.
Hudson Wood, 20, Ag. Lab., Y.
James Witty, 65, Ag. Lab.   , Y.

I remember this Robinson now, he left a Will which I obtained and Suddaby was left to distribute per instructions.

Administering the Will like this, meant no relatives were listed in a public Probate document!

These Robinson, could keep themselves totally private!

Then what happened recently, I came across this tatty Hotham Family of South Dalton printed Tree and managed to obtain 8 images of it.

The four lower images of Hotham of South Dalton, numbered 5, 6, 7 & 8 should adjoin each other side by side (5. on the left ... ).

Hello All

Looking at HOTHAM has been rather overtaken by an Ernest HOOD, 14, a Servant in the 1911 household of Henry Simpson HOTHAM.

1911 Bainton, Driffield, Yorkshire
Henry Simpson HOTHAM, Head, 43, born Bainton, Yorkshire.
Agnes TOPHAM, Wife, 47, born Bainton, Yorkshire.
9 Servants (7 Farm and 2 Domestic)

One servant was:-
Ernest HOOD, Serv, 14, Horseman on a Farm, born Tibthorpe, Yorkshire.

1939 Register
Cherry Hall, Ernest HOOD born 7th September 1896, worker

But the first at Cherry Hall, on that page is:-
Cherry Hall, Thomas A. BECKETT, born 8th January 1866.

The BECKETT surname is interesting for two reasons:-

1) The published summary of the Will of Thomas Crompton WILSON, mentions a Gilbert A. BECKETT (attached).
2) Maudland TURNER (nee Hood) at Selby, Yorks, her eldest Brother-in-Law, was John TURNER, bapt South Kirkby, Yorkshire 1760 and John TURNER's descendants were BECKETT, etc.

Main part of our Beckett research to date in relation to John TURNER ...
John Turner Baptised 1760 South Kirkby, Yorkshire (for information)

John Ellerington = Mary Brigham

Hello All

My distant relatives are John Robinson and Jane Brigham, who married in 1788 at North Cave and these are also mentioned in a summary of a Will, listed in the Hotham Family of Scorborough and South Dalton catalogue handlist (Hull History Centre).

However, their 1788 marriage does not seem to feature in the Hotham of South Dalton printed Tree (lower 4 parts attached the other day), despite the Will mentioning them being in the Hotham of South Dalton documents collection.

John Robson Hotham
At another distant family Marriage of mine a John Robson Hotham, was a witness.

The parents of John Robson Hotham, were Thomas Hotham of North Newbald [born North Dalton] & Mary Brigham of Cherry Burton, who married in 1816.

His Grandparents were likely John Hotham and Jane Robson, who married 1774 at North Dalton, Yorkshire.

COOK, Witness
The COOK (witness) is missing in the B.T. Copy and he or she does not appear elsewhere in the Parish Register opening, nor on the adjacent pages.

Any ideas on the Cook at the wedding please? I thought of Frances or Francis, but looks like it starts with a letter, then a full stop?

Thanks Mark

Added:
I don't think finding this COOK is going to help me with George Hood of Selby (married 1815), nor the mystery Jane Hood (buried Selby 1803). It will just likely broaden those in my wider Tree.

I will see if the Archive can look at the original Cook signature too.
