Hello Dave and All
I managed to get a copy of a letter written on 23rd July 1945 by a J. W. Chapman of 34 Calder Road, Blackpool, N.S. to Altus Hayes, a US relative, via Richard P Taylor.
Original post in 2017
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=783146.msg6377882#msg6377882It seems Altus Hayes managed to speak with Miss Mabel North of 4 Hampton Road, Doncaster, England, before she died in 1956 and scribbled some notes on the letter, that the "
Hoods of Selby England - Shipbuilders" ...
Miss Mabel Lydia North, of that address was the Daughter of John Cooper North.
Mary Ellen Hood was the Daughter of James Hood and Sarah Arundel of Selby.
14th April 1873 at Selby Mary Ellen Hood, 20, Spinster, of Ousegate Selby, Daughter of James Hood, Tallow Chandler, married
Arthur Chapman, 22, Printer, of Balsall Heath, Son of William Martin Chapman, Retired Tradesman,
at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, at Selby, by Licence.
Present as witnesses:- Elizabeth Cook Hood ; George Chapman.
Mary Ellen Hood might be the Mary Ellen Chapman (witness) with John Cooper North, on the 1901 William Martin Chapman (Father: Arthur Chapman, dec'd), to Charlotte Wilson North, Marriage Certificate (but I have not checked when Mary Ellen died).
Not Foster's Yard at SelbySamuel Gutteridge of Selby took out a Licence on 1st December 1805 to marry Mary Foster, despite a search we could find no Hood link to Foster, Ship Builder, at Selby.
However, John Foster and Joseph Foster, Merchants and Copartners of Selby are in the London Gazette 29th June 1816 relating to a Commission of Bankruptcy and the Assignees want to continue the business of Ship Builders in the Yard at Selby. They also have premises at Knottingley (6th August 1816 Notice).
In the 1841 Census, Ship Yard, Selby,
Samuel Gutteridge 53, Ship Builder, Y.
Mary Gutteridge 60, Y.
Ann Carr, 15, F.S. Y.
Their neighbour was
John Wilkinson, 50, Stone Agent, Y.
Mary Wilkinson 39 [formerly Arundel], Y.
Sarah Wilkinson [Arundel] 10 Y.
Sarah Wilkinson, 18, F.S., Y.
Jane Bateman, 5,
Ind., Y.
When R. P. Taylor, last made contact c.2017, he seemed very interested in the Arundel side and Jackson, as he had also found and got copies of the Selby M.I. Inscriptions, relating to those.
Thomas Jackson was not a Ship Builder, he was a Sail Maker - see Pigot's Directory 1828-9 for Selby [where we have been misprinted as Wood, fortunately I have a Survey taken about 5 years earlier for Selby].
Shepherd's Ship Yard at SelbyAlexander Shepherd, Shipwright, of Selby, who was Bankrupted (notice in the London Gazette 1805) he personally didn't marry a Hood.
Then this 1791 map appeared at Northallerton Record Office which shows Fosters Raff Yard (a Timber Yard) and also Shepherd's Yard on the Banks of the Ouse at Selby.
I managed to find a newspaper Sale Notice dated 1800 which links Alexander Shepherd's Ship Yard at Selby to James Shepherd, Ship Builder of Hull.
1781 at Fishlake by LicenceJames Shepherd married Ann Steemson, and into another Ship Building family of Fishlake.
1786 Birth of Elizabeth Shepherd at SelbyJames and Ann Shepherd, Shipcarpenter, first children were recorded in the Selby Dades Register, which stated he was the Son of Alexander Shepherd of Whitby, Shipcarpenter and Elizabeth his Wife.
On
25th November 1735 at Whitby, Yorkshire ...
Alexander SHEPHERD married Elizabeth HORD.
One of their other Sons was recorded in the Whitby Presbyterian Register.
--------------------
My late Grandmother made reference to the pronunciation 55 years ago and made it sound like Hoard and also made reference to Hood being pronounced Who-ood and spelt Hood.
My late Grandmother also said we were related to the Stephenson surname.
When Ann Steemson was named in the Selby Birth Register (Birth of Elizabeth Shepherd) she has been named as Ann Stephenson of Fishlake, but her name at marriage to James Shepherd was Ann Steemson and their Ship Building business at Fishlake was Steemson.
---------------
Also a William Hord witnessing a marriage of Robert Harper & Frances Marsh in 1797 at Selby, previously mentioned.
Regarding the Pearson surname (in one of James Hood's childrens' names), I have found a 1790 Thomas Bromley, Sailor 23 = Elizabeth Pearson, Spinster 20 (Dau'r of James Pearson & Mary France of Fishlake, Dau'r of Richard France of Fishlake, Farmer), Marriage at Selby, where both
Alex: Shepherd and Elizabeth Shepherd, are witnesses with a Marey Harley.
Thomas Bromley came up when following the three marriages of a Mary Turner, forward in time from Doncaster to Thorne, but no evidence to link her as a sister to Charles Turner of South Kirkby and no Death / Burial found, yet.
---------------
On 12th September 1717 at Scarborough on the same day (probably a double wedding) ...
Jno SPENCER married Mary BARTON.
Tho: SHEPHERD married Fortune SPENCER.
Fortune Shepherd died and was buried at Scarborough.
I managed to get a scan of a Shepherd of Scarborough Will and his Sons lived at Whitby
