Thank you Dave
I think we looked at the rather poor witness signatures (from the microfilm scan) on here, of that 1778 John Hood, Marriage, at London, after finding the Scarborough, Yorkshire, 1778 Marriage Licence.
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=812140.msg6724668#msg6724668Added:
Bear in mind there were two John Hood, marriages at Scarborough around the mid 18th Century period, who were not the same John Hood.
Added and then Updated:-
1759
John Hood of Scarborough 37 years & upwards married Elizabeth Hood of Scarborough, 21 years and upwards, a Spinster.
1763
The other John Hood 25 yrs & upwards, married Elizabeth Leppington 26 yrs & upwards and the Licence I got also confirmed she was a Widow (no mention of widow, nor their ages in the Marriage Register, so Licences must always be seen! If they married by Licence. )
I think you had already worked out that Elizabeth Spencer must have first married John Leppington in 1756 at Scarborough, Yorkshire, to agree with the first child Elizabeth of Charles & Maudland Turner (nee Hood) Register information, baptised in 1795 at Selby, Yorkshire, to link the ancestry of Maudland Hood to John Spencer of Scarborough, Mariner.

Added:
If James Hood didn't know who his Grandmother was, he could use surnames of his known Aunts and Uncles, or Nieces and Nephews and this practice, even mixed with surnames of your parentage and your Wife's parentage is done.
Added:
In the Selby Register, they didn't seem to know, or the information was withheld, as to who Jane Hood was, buried 15th August 1803, aged 65 years.
I am also looking at the possibility (not completed yet) that the Surnames of COOK and PEARSON were Cousins or descendants from the Grandmother of James HOOD born Selby and obviously his Brothers and Sisters:- William HOOD, John HOOD, George HOOD and the late Richard HOOD and his three sisters Sarah, Mary and Ellen HOOD the last four names who died before Marriage.
Some Surname middle naming sequences can be also be in a parallel line of descent, from an ancestor Mother and we have a COCKING (witness) at the 1815 Marriage at Selby.
After finding in an 1881 Census by chance for COWICK (usually in Snaith) but bordering and in Goole, with a William COCKIN, 74, born Stainforth, with a George COOK, 52, Gardener.
This made think of children born to Father COCKIN(G) and the Mother Maiden Surname COOK and vice versa.
I applied for a number of £3 Birth Certificate examples.
In the nearby Registration District of Goole (when the large selection of Birth Certificate variables were downloaded), there were obviously two COOK couples where the Mother was Maiden Surname COCKIN and at Goole, having children.
1865
Arthur Son of William COOK and Emma COCKING, Docks Labourer, at Old Goole.
1865
John Singleton COOK, Son of John COOK and Martha COCKIN, Seaman, (Merchant Service).
I am not quite sure whether I have the earliest Births yet of the COOK = COCKIN(G) and not checked vice versa.
William CockinWilliam COCKIN, born Stainforth, Yorkshire, 10th January 1827, from a Masters and Mates Certificate.
Found two Births at West Stockwith and Registered Gainsborough:-
1854 Sarah Elizabeth COCKIN
1856 William COCKIN,
Father: William Cockin
Mother: Martha COCKIN formerly Martha PEARSON.
Also three more Births seemingly the same couple at Goole, Yorkshire:-
1858 John COCKIN (parentage confirmed)
1861 Charles COCKIN
1866 Charles Edward COCKING
In the Vessels Census:-
Martha COCKIN(G) [nee Pearson], was born Clayworth, Nottinghamshire (Notts).
1851Census Martha Pearson, Head, U, 24, born Clayworth, Notts, was an Innkeeper at West Stockwith, East Retford, Notts. Registration District Gainsborough.
Updated from Certificate image now:-
1853, at Sisterton, County of Nottingham on 31st December, by Licence William COCKING, full, Bachelor, Mariner, Goole, Father: John COCKING, Mariner.
Martha PEARSON, full, Spinster, West Stockwith, Father: William Pearson, Mariner.
Present (wits) Charles Pearson ; Ann Eliza Bramham.
Added:
That witness is interesting, another 1868 Birth Certificate with Mother Maiden name Nancy Bramman and Father name Daniel COOK.
Also a Bramham in the GRO Index.
Martha Pearson married at Misterton, Nottinghamshire, near to the place where she was Innkeeper.
CommentThe Cockin = Pearson, marriage is certainly before the Birth of Bernard PEARSON HOOD, at Scarborough to James HOOD and Sarah ARUNDEL.
