1717 Roman Catholic Allegiance Records Mrs Mary Barnard

A Free rent of one Shilling and Eight pence payable to her and yearly Issueing out of Two messuages formerly Mr Cooks in Selby aforesaid belonging to Mrs Mary Barnard and in poss'ion[?] of Mrs Mary Barnard Mr Thomas Moseley and Charles Bateson.

West Yorkshire Archives Service - Cat. Ref. QE 28/173

Background
"Roman Catholics were required to register their names and real estates with the Clerk of the Peace of the county where they owned property in order to attest to their loyalty. Those who refused to swear the oath were liable to be imprisoned. Convicted recusants were ordered to receive Anglican communion once a year or face a fine or seizure of their property. Recusants were also barred from office and professions including the military and informers were paid £50 for revealing a priest saying mass or persons attending mass. The obligation was repealed in 1791."

Mrs Mary Barnard's house was formerly the house of Mr COOK.

Added:-
I even wonder if George Hood of Selby was a Catholic and the reason for no Yorkshire Baptism or Birth record.

Catholics didn't get full freedom until the early 1800s.

At Selby, Yorkshire, Ap 20 [20th April] 1707

Isaac Bernard married Mrs Cook

In the West Yorkshire Catholic Oath records (about 1717), regarding the property of Mrs Mary Barnard, the record says:- Two Messuages formerly Mr Cooks

An update to all who contributed thank you and a bit of a long shot, but I'm going to look at this family at Pannal Hall ...

An old claim online linked to my Hood some years ago, claimed to have been in contact with a Casson who had also promoted their Surname, also some Arms of a claimed Casson predecessor at Pannal Hall.

Apparently the Family papers which once belonged to Jane Casson Hood of Selby (a Wife of a Brother to my main Hood line from the 1815 Selby Yorkshire Marriage), inherited were disposed of?

It was previously screen shotted by Claire, emailed and kept by me that Casson claimed online that their Edwin Casson, was of Pannal Hall, Yorkshire, although the Census says Pannal House.

I have just googled Pannal again and an unchecked online claim appears, that a Bentley of Pannal married a Procter.

Well, my Ancestor George Hood of Selby was invoved in property dealings with a Wm Massey (Quaker) who also married a Procter of Selby, in the Abbey Church at Selby.

Parish of Pannal 1802

"William Bentley and Mary Procter   June 16th"

Marriages mixed with Baptisms, but seems to be Marriages right hand side.

[No residence given]

The History and Topography of Harrogate and the Forest of Knaresborough,
by William Grainge,
London : Simpkin, Marshall, And Co.
York : John Sampson.
1882

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=sr8HAAAAQAAJ&printsec=titlepage&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false

Regarding "Pannal House, now used as a boarding school," the book clearly states there on page 236 that:- "After the decease of the last William Crosby, it was purchased by the late Edwin Casson, Esq., after whose demise, in 1863, it was purchased by Mr. Thomas Watson, the present owner."

Casson linking to Pannal Hall is an error and confirmed by the Probate Calendar and the book, to be Pannal House.

The 1863 Probate Calendar says Edwin Casson of Pannal House, Pannal, Yorkshire, was formerly of Bradford, Yorkshire.

 --------------------------------------------------------

The book has some information on the Bentley Family of Pannal Hall in the Registers and also some church memorial inscriptions at Pannal on p.241 and other pages.

The references to the surname Procter are on pages:- 222 ; 229 & 241.

I cannot see a link to Procter of Selby, regarding Mary Bentley (nee Procter), in the book.

Interesting that the attachments also mention, Thorne, Mordecai Casson, Curtis, etc., discussed before and that some family CASSON diaries were claimed to be burnt.

 -----------------------------------------------------------

Interesting, an Ann Conway, servant in the house of Mord'i Casson, at Thorne, in the 1841 Census.

One in my line born Hannah Mary ... Anna Mary Hood, 27, of Selby, daughter of John Hood, Tanner, married John Conway Curtis, 26, in 1878, at Selby, Yorks, son of Samuel Brunyee Curtis, Accountant.
Present as wits: Clara Richardson Hood ; George Lowther Curtis.

Goughy was on to Conway Curtis and

Claire found this:-
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=756955.msg6308594#msg6308594

1880 a Warrant for his Arrest issued by the Police at Moor Street, Birmingham!

My family called her A. M. Hood of 291 Camberwell Road, London. But Goughy discovered at 291 Camberwell Road, London, her surname was not Hood, nor Curtis, but Anna Mary Grove.

 -----------------------------------------------------------

The Signature of James Cockin who married Mary Torr in 1791 at Thorne, looks similar to the one on George Hood's 1815 Marriage.

More like a Thorn in the flesh.

 -----------------------------------------------------------

My late Grandmother suggested something similar to Incest [Consanguineous] had gone on somewhere, but she was stopped from saying anymore, as I was a boy and too young to hear such things.
 -----------------------------------------------------------

Some notes were added to a family Copy Will outer and Will we have, notes copied from a TNA document (RG 6/866) ; the 1786 Scarborough Register and William Hood's 1851 Marriage.
