My 3rd Great Grandmother Sarah Arundel Hood (wife of James Hood) may be the daughter of John Wilkinson (b1784) ? Which I’m sure someone on here has mentioned the Wilkinson name?

Hello

Are you aware that Sarah Arundel has a Wesleyan Methodist, Selby, Baptism Certificate, giving her Mother's name and "Illegitimate"? Amongst the Nonconformist records on Anc.

Just looked at the 1851 Marriage of James Hood and Sarah Arundel, her Father was given as John Arundel and his Occupation was "Stone Agent".

1851 Ousegate, Selby, Yorkshire
John Wilkinson, Head, Mar, 67, Stone Agent, All born Selby
Mary Wilkinson, Wife, Mar, 50,
Sarah Arundel, Daur, U, 20,

Suggested John Wilkinson, looks like the Father of Sarah Arundel.
 -----------
I think there was a paragraph in the Derby newspaper about the death of James Hood and his Widow Sarah and the Inquest.
 -----------------------------

I descend from John Hood of Selby, Tanner, who married Sarah Richardson in 1846 (John Hood, was the Brother of James Hood).

James Hood & Sarah named their children with middle names, Russell and Arundel are known.

But 1 & 2 are not confirmed:-

1. Bernard Pearson Hood

2. Elizabeth Cook Hood
(She also signed Elizabeth Cooke Hood).

I wonder if there was any talk amongst your family about the naming of James & Sarah Hood's children.

3. James Alfred Hood, born 25th September 1863 at 34 Blandford Street,  Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland in the Couny of Durham.

It looks possible that Alfred might come from Alfred William Hood born Selby 1854, he was the Son of William Hood & Jane, nee Casson (William Hood, Brother of James Hood).

Alfred is also a forename and a surname.

Thank you.

I have his Birth Certificate too, but wondered if there was any family knowledge or discussion of where Pearson came from?

Not that I know of? I’m not sure where the Pearson came from ?  My great grandmother Bertha Brooks (daughter of Bernard Pearson Hood) also had another child in between Joyce and Jean. A little boy named Gregory Bernard Brooks. ( he died a few months old) just for info middle name after her father. Seems a tradition using first/second or maiden names as middle names.

Hello

Fairly certain all of these Births below are related to your James HOOD and Sarah ARUNDEL line too.

1881 St Giles Durham
27 Young Street
James Hood, 52, Tallow Chandler, born Selby.
Sarah Hood, 50, born Selby.
* John M Hood, 23, Colliery Brakesman, born Selby.
William R. Hood, 21, Tallow Chandler, born Selby.
George A. Hood, 18, Printer, born Selby.
Bernard P. Hood, 10, Scholar, born Scarborough.

* I believe, John M Hood, should have been written John W Hood.

After seeing the above I have had a good scout round this evening on the GRO.

1881 (December Quarter)
John Wilkinson HOOD married Mary Ann HOPPER in the Registration District of Durham

1882 Birth
Charlotte Georgina HOOD, at Rennys Buildings, St Giles, Gilesgate Moor
Mother: Mary Ann HOPPER.

[1888, Renny's Buildings, Sunderland Road, Durham Corporation]

1885 Birth
Charles Burnett HOOD, at 24 Brinkburn Street, Newcastle,
Mother: Mary Ann HOPPER

1889 Birth
Sarah Arundel HOOD, at Walker Road, Newcastle,
Mother: Mary Ann HOPPER

In the 1891 Census the couple seem to be at Derby, with Edmond Hood, 7 yrs and Sarah Hood, 2 yrs, both born Newcastle.

I'm sure BURNETT rings a bell with me somewhere.

Mark

Added:- Mary Ann Hopper's Mother was Robinson according to the GRO Index.

Amended:-

When Charles Burnett Hood, died aged 5 years, his death was registered as Charles Barnard Hood.

Further Add:
Bernard, Barnard, Burnard, Burnet(t) and Barnet are variations of the same surname.

Middlesbrough on Tees
There was a firm of Printers (19th Century) called:-
Wilkinson, Burnett & Hood, Printers

Gosh so much information, there’s so many entwined families. I’m getting confused with having so much information and my family tree in ancestry is bursting. How do you know if a person is the right one when there’s little information and yet so many in same areas with same names ? I think I’ve a few wrong on my tree but it’s getting so difficult? I’ve been doing this in and off for years (I took over after my grandfather passed, there’s so much I wished I’d asked him and my Grandmother! Without them the I’m struggling!)
