Hello

John Wilkinson Hood (born Selby, Yorkshire) who married Mary Ann Hopper in 1881 was the Brother of Bernard Pearson Hood (Two of the Sons of James Hood & Sarah Arundle, alias Wilkinson).

Burnett possibly should have been spelt Barnard or Bernard at Birth, because his name was Charles Barnard Hood when he died aged 5 yrs.

But there are old Barnard and Hood families of Selby, as well.

General

The problem with Selby, Yorkshire, is that 100 years of Presbyterian records for Selby from c.1690 are missing.

The earliest Wesleyan Methodist from 1785 - no records.

The Catholic Survey, Returns of Papists of 1767 for Selby, Yorkshire, were allowed to submit only single letters for forename & surname, in the Return (I have a printed edition of this Return).

Mark

Added: this 1858 Birth Certificate showing Sarah Arundle / Sarah Wilkinson, also suggests her Father was Wilkinson.

James A Hood brother of Bernard Pearson Hood had a son, Joseph Arundel Hood 1905 born Ilkeston Derby. So yet another using the Arundel middle name.

Hi Mark

I thought it would be useful to just put down James and Sarah's  family for "tracking purposes"

Mary Ellen Hood b Selby 1853
Elizabeth Cook Hood b Selby 1854
Adeline Hood b Selby 1855
Sarah Hood b Selby 1856
John Wilkinson Hood b Selby 1858
William Russell Hood b Selby 1861
James Alfred Hood b Sunderland  1863
George Arundel Hood b 1866 Selby
Bernard Pearson Hood b 1870 Scarborough

In the 1871 Census, Mary Ellen Hood is staying with a Dobson family in Bowling, Bradford and is stated as "cousin".  The head of household is Thomas Duckworth Dobson b 1829 Wakefield  and his wife Mary Ann b 1833 London, Middlesex.  Thomas Duckworth Dobson married Mary Ann Bateman in 1855 in Selby.

End of quote

I hope the quote helps.

The poster also says they are also related to Bernard P Hood, of Derby.

Over the years there seems to have been more interest from the family of James Hood of Selby.

There are two of us in my family.

On Rootschat several tentative links have been made for the origin of George Hood of Selby, Cooper, then a Brewer and Tanner, but he is elusive!

Derby Mercury, 26th December 1894

INQUESTS IN DERBY.

"Mr J. Close, Borough Coroner, held an Inquest at the Town Hall on Wednesday evening on the body of Mr James Hood, aged 66 years, late of 84, Friary Terrace, Drewry-lane, who died suddenly on Monday last.- Sarah Hood, widow of the deceased, who refused to be sworn, and made a declaration, stated that her husband was not very well on the morning in question, and did not get up until about 11 o'clock." ...

I'll let you look the rest up, verdict quoted.

"Dr A. Lundy, of 28, Friar Gate, said that death was due to Syncope, and the jury returned a verdict accordingly."

Apparently, Quakers don't swear, but make an Affirmation instead, if you were wondering why she refused to be sworn.

Thanks yes I’m aware of the illegitimate child document and also the inquest (i have the death certificate) i tried to find details on the inquest in Derby but all records were lost and i did find it odd! Also there’s rumours of Freemasons. I have the newspaper article also. Very illusive.

Regarding the Inquest, the newspaper went on to say, he had just finished brushing his hair when he fell down and caught the back of his head against the floor and died.

When Charles Burnett Hood, died aged 5 years, his death was registered as Charles Barnard Hood.

Looked at my Oxford Dictionary of Names and Barnard, Bernard and Barnet, are all variations of the same name.

Apparently, Barnard, Bernard, Burnard, Burnet and Burnett, Barnet are variations of the same surname.

It is most interesting that a Hood family member from Selby Yorkshire, has used Burnett and Barnard for the same child.

Main Variations:- Scottish, Irish, French and Old German.
