Hello

Township Records, Selby Yorkshire DC/SBU/IX/2/4 Account Book 1815 to 1819
Selby, Yorkshire, 'Overseers of Poor' Accounts up to the new Act (1837), only survive from 1815 to 1819. Earlier Account Books end about 1780.

Pensions
John Hood, buried Selby, 4th April 1819 aged 82 years [the Mariner] received 3 shillings per payment at Selby, Yorkshire, as an 'Out Pensioner' from the first surviving Accounts in 1815 to March 1819, when his payments stop part of the way through a payment period (around the time of his burial) and apparently not residing in the Workhouse, being an 'Out Pensioner'.

In the notes which follow the Selby, Yorkshire, payments, it makes reference to Charles Turner receiving 10 shillings 6 pence expenses towards John Hood's Funeral.

Some did receive more than this figure for a funeral in the Accounts.
 ----------
George Hood of Selby
Regarding George Hood, the only new snippets in some recently seen paperwork was that:-
a) his occupation was Professional
b) George Hood of Selby sent someone else to negotiate and make the Agreement to Purchase the Wren Lane, Malt Kiln of John Clarkson's of New Port, Eastrington.
c) George Hood promised to make the payment at the Angel Inn, in Howden.
d) George Hood paid a pretty substantial amount (for 1836) of £510 for the very modest small property of Lord Petre.
e) Edward Parker, Solicitor, prepared a large and extensive 49 page Abstract of Title costing £31 - 16s - 9d in Legal Charges, for Hood's property purchase from Petre at Selby that seemed to cost £50.
f) there is an almost complete Title page fragment torn from an old New Testament Bible and on the reverse are some 18th Century Russell dates including Sarah Russell's and also the William Russell to Mary Burton, marriage and date. Rather interestingly it is marked H1 in different thicker ink and have seen marking like this before on exhibit documents returned from Court.
g) before and about 1836 various named individuals had secured Judgements against Petre in the Court of the King's Bench and the Court of Common Pleas. Seen a newspaper reference previously.
h) it would seem Sarah Russell was prohibited from having a Dower and to receive only an annual sum.

More mystery for me!

Mark

Hi Mark

Re-reading this above:

His occupation was  ' Professional ' ? ( Could we be talking university academic educated man) Richard Gibson's bankruptcy in newspapers brought George Hood to Selby. ( Like modern day 'dragons den' rich man looking for business opportunity - Rescue possible recovery stock with the right professional business management)  ???  - George Hood maybe from the financial southern regions.  Meets Sarah Russel (Russell). love & romance  sets in that  keeps him in Selby to lay his roots (Build their nest - so to speak)  ;D
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Searching wider and related by marriages I have come across many Hood surnames in about 5 Counties and none positively link to my George Hood of Selby.
 ----------
It was not Martha Hotchkiss in my Sarah Russell lineage, the Marriage Register was definitely signed Martha Hodgson.
 ----------
By Marriage in 1815 George Hood = Sarah Russell ... research in the Dades Register at Selby shows we are also related to Vincent alias Vinson, by Marriage, due to the children having the same descent as Sarah Russell.

Also one of the Vincent twins survived in diagram.

Edward Burton married 3 times.
 ----------
1778 at Selby, Yorkshire, England
John Vincent, 25 & upwards, Mariner & Elizabeth Russell, 21 & upwards, Spinster
In the Presence of:-
Mary Russell ; William Leaper ; Jane Wormald

We have come across Wormald / Wornald owning a vessel.

1804
William Vinson, Mariner, Bachelor, 22 &
Sarah Garbut, Spinster 20
In the Presence of:-
William Walker ; Betcy Hick, John Renton ; John Garbut ; Mary Garbut ; Mary Vinson

William Walker is also on the radar, due to an online claim of a William Walker of Selby, being related to Matthew Hood of old, buried in Selby Abbey.

Added:
The Will of John Renton of Selby, Cordwainer, Proved 1807, said his Niece was Sarah, Wife of William Bolton of Hambleton and his Nephew was John Cheesbrough of Leeds in the County of York, Cordwainer.
 -----------
An interesting aside ...
An Elizabeth Vincent has married in 1826 at Studland, Dorset and a George Hood (very slightly different signature) was a witness at her Marriage.

But often they link to another Hood family, if they can be ruled out.
 ----------
Added; brief summary information of the Will of John Renton.

Further to Will of John Renton of Selby, Cordwainer, Proved 1807 (Will summary added above).

1793 Selby
John Cheesbrough, Cordwainer, 27,
married Ann Middleton, Spinster, 28
Present: Will'm Champney ; Betty Rusel

With Middleton and a Champney present, there is also a suggested link to the earlier 18th Century Hoods of Selby.
 ----------
Added:

1780 at Brayton, Yorkshire, 23rd Nov'r
John Boulton, aged 27 Husbandman &
Sarah Cheesbrough, Spinster, aged 21 (mark of).
In the Presence of:- John Robinson ; Joseph Horncastle.
 ----------
James Cockin & Mary Torr

1791 Thorne, Yorkshire
James Cockin married Mary Torr (written as Turr)
Present: John Cockin ; Susana Cortham

In 1793 Susy Coatem (signed Sussey Cortham) married Wm Green, her surname signature matches with her being present at the 1791 James Cockin marriage.
Her Father was Christopher Coatham and Mother was Frances.
1793 Marriage, wit's were:- Thomas Outybridge ; John Banks

James & Mary Cockin childrens' Baptisms at Thorne & Armthorpe 1792 - 1809 (Colour images) give details and says her Parents were John and Ann TORR (not Turr) of Hatfield Woodhouse (see 1799 & 1802 baptisms). James Cockin, Labourer was the S of James Cockin of Barnby Dun.

John Torr & Middleton
Might be a coincidence, but it looks like Mary's father John Torr might have married again, to a Middleton (but no suggestion of a Middleton to Selby link)?

1784 Burials, Hatfield, Yorkshire
Ann Torr, Abode Woodhouse, Wife of John Torr of Woodhouse, Labourer, 10th / 12th January, 50 years.
 ----------
Robinson, was another surname my late Grandmother mentioned about 50 years ago.

Following on from the two posts above, I also become related via marriages, to William Walker of Selby (Walker family linked to Thomas Walker of Selby and both link back to Thorne, Yorkshire), when on ...

25th November 1815 Selby Yorkshire, by Banns
William Walker aged 23 married
Sarah Sefton aged 19
Present (wits): Charles Turner ; Henry Sefton.
Present:- Charles Turner [Maudland Hood's husband]

Charles Turner is related to Sefton (by marriages), because George Hood had married Sarah Russell (a few months before), Sarah Russell is linked twice by Russell Marriages to Burton of Selby and Burton are related to Sefton by Marriage too.

George Hood & Maudland Turner ( nee Hood ) must be related.

Because the Pedigree of Sarah Sefton is given when her Sister, Alice Sefton was born at Selby in 1793 linking to Burton.

Sarah & Alice Sefton's Father, Edward Sefton of Selby, Clockmaker, had married Ann, the Daughter of Thomas Burton of Selby Joiner by Elizabeth.

1802 Will of William Moxon of Selby.
States his Friends were Morley Wharrey of Selby Esq., Mark Fothergill, Surgeon and Samuel Bradley, Cordwainer, all of Selby.
... my Sister Alice Burton the Widow of George Burton late of Selby aforesaid. Also leaves money for the Education and advancement in Life of William Sefton the son of Edward Sefton of Selby.
 ----------
Chester Newby, George Hood's Marriage Bondsman, he was also a Miller.

William Walker, of Cliff, Miller, was the Son of Wm Walker of Selby, Baker, according to the Will of William Walker of Selby.

Leeds Intelligencer, 8th April 1811
Friday morning, after a very short illness, Mr. Wm. Walker, of Selby, bread and biscuit baker.
 ----------
My memory must be bad, I had posted some info about this here ...

Regarding the reference to Walker Watson, also a Miller, at Cliff cum Lund, he appears to be born Fangfoss in 1784 and unrelated to Wm Walker of Selby.

Regarding Mr Tim Schofield who features the grave of Matthew Hood of Selby ...

His possible link to the earlier Hoods of Selby might be via a Walker, looking at his Selby Abbey photos?

There was an Ann Walker who married Samuel Hood of St Olaves, at York.

There was Samuel Hood baptised at Selby in 1810, Son of Nathaniel Hood.

1767, York All Saints Pavement, Yorkshire
Samuel Hood of St Olaves Parish married
Ann Walker.

1776
Confirmation that Samuel Hood was a Miller, now a Labourer ...

Burial 1776
Ann Hood Wife of Samuel Hood formerly a Miller now a Labourer, Abode Mary gate, 16th September / 18th September in the Churchyard, 55 years

1794 St Olaves, York, Samuel Hood, No descent given, Abode Mary-gate, died 5th Jan'y, buried 7th Jan'y, 87 years.

Samuel Hood, Born about 1707.

At last another!

Regarding George Hood of Selby (who married Sarah Russell in 1815), I have found another link to John Hood of Selby, this time by association to John Hood, Mariner, of Selby (buried 1819).

The Landlord of John Hood of Selby from 1792 to 1802/3 was John Spencer.

When John Spencer of Selby died his Will Proved 1810 said that his Nephew was John Spencer of Conisbrough Parks.
(Incidentally, John Spencer of Selby and his siblings were born Hemsworth and South Kirkby. Also the husband of Maudland Hood, Charles Turner was born South Kirkby).

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=98168.msg6401148#msg6401148
 ----------
In 1838 George Hood of Selby purchased (along with James Collinson) property belonging to Bridget Nicholson, Widow, left by her late husband in Trust for their Son, she had to sell due to the Trustees not wanting to manage the property any longer.

I have been looking at the names on the 1838 Conveyance Deeds.

The link by association:-

The late John Clark of Potter Grange (his child Heiress was Hannah Carter Clark) on the 1838 Deeds and would have been known to George Hood (if George Hood was John Hood's Son or relative), because ...

1826 John Clark of Snaith [Potter Grange in newspaper] married Hannah Carter of Howden.
[Newspaper has a misprint and calls John Clark in the Marriage Register, Thomas Clark]

The Brother of nee Hannah Carter was John Carter of Howden, Widower, who married Mary Spencer of Conisbrough, Spinster, at Conisbrough in 1833.

John Carter was a Wine and Spirit Merchant of Howden and took up farming at Potter Grange before 1841.

See also 1841 Census for Potter Grange,
Armin
Potto Grange
John Carter, 41, Farmer, Y.
Mary Carter, 25, Y.
and children occupying Potter Grange.

See 1840 Birth snippet attached.

See also 1851 Census.
Thomas Smith occupies Old Potter Grange and two Households away ...
John Carter, Head, Mar, 51, born Howden.
Mary Carter, Wife, Mar, 40, born Conisbrough Park and family.

An 1840 Birth entry for Mary Carter confirms her Mother was nee Mary Spencer and her Father, John Carter was the Informant of Potter Grange, Armin.

Mark

ADDED:

In Summary:- John Spencer (the Landlord of John Hood of Selby 1792 to 1802/3), was related to one of the parties who were involved in the sale of the Selby properties [by Order of Chancery c.1835].

The property portfolio were originally intended for Samuel Nicholson a minor to inherit, but the Trustees didn't want to manage them, the Court ordered a Sale c.1835, but the property portfolio didn't seem to sell.

George Hood of Selby stepped in, purchased the properties in 1838 and disposed of them, some transferred to James Collinson.
 ----------
The above properties are totally separate to the former late John Clark, Tannery, property in Gowthorpe, which George Hood purchased previously and 4/5ths transferred to Hood in 1831 and the final 1/5th later.

When I sent you the Cemetery plot plan, you will see the 3 Hood graves are in the same area as the Standering/Burton/Richardson graves.  If you remember I noticed it when a colleague was sharing his research on the Standering/Burton family.  I'll ask if he'll email his findings (I did listen to his presentation but got distracted when he put up the cemetery plan!)

I haven't yet made a connection between your Mary Burton's (who marrried William Russell) father Edward and the Burton's who married into Standering family (i.e. Mary Burton married Thomas Standering in 1826)  Edward was a wheelwright, and if I remember on the searching I did last year when he died he was a wood dealer (can't remember which thread that would be on)

Hello Shirley and All

Regarding John Hood, Sarah Hood, daughter Annie and a Richardson, graves near those of Standering & Burton.

I was aware my 4 x Gt Grandfather, George Hood, also brewed beer in Gowthorpe, Selby, circa 1832, (besides his Malt Kiln business at Wren Lane, Selby). Hood's Gowthorpe brewery appears to have become the business of Mr J. Burton by the 1870s:-

Hood's Yard, Gowthorpe, Selby, Yorkshire

Selby Local Board of Health
(From newspapers)
1874 September
Plans were also submitted for the alterations to a Malt Kiln in Hood's Yard, Gowthorpe.

1874 October
The Plans submitted by Mr J. Burton for the errection of a Malt-house at Hood's Yard Gowthorpe, were again returned for amendment, as they did not meet the requirements of the Local Government Act.

1879 July
Mr Smith, Bricklayer, attended on behalf of Mr John Burton to ascertain if the Board would require plans for the conversion of some piggeries into a cart and straw shed, in the Nag's Head yard, Gowthorpe. The Board considered this would be a decided improvement.

Standering and Burton
When Standering & Burton became a Limited Company in 1882 ( Company No: 17608; Standering and Burton Ltd. Incorporated in 1882), the following was published in December 1882:-

December 1882
Standering & Burton, Limited.-
This company proposes to take over the business of Brewer, Maltster &c. of Mr John Burton, at Selby, under the style of Standering and Burton. It was registered on the 5th inst., with a capital of £10,000 in £1 shares, with the following as first subscribers:
* J. Burton, Clifton, York, merchant
G. A. Buckingham, Selby, traveller
J. Morley, Selby, clerk
W. N. Jardine, Selby
J. Foote Rees, Selby
C. Turner, Selby, stockbroker
* T. G. Hawdon, Selby, spirit merchant

The first are the subscribers denoted by an Asterisk.

[T. G. Hawdon was Tom Gibson Hawdon]

1881 Clifton, York, Yorkshire (Census)
John Burton, Head, 48, Wine & Spirit Merchant - Brewer Maltster & Cork Manufacturer, Born Selby, Yorkshire.
Ellen Burton, Wife, 40, born Kilburn, Middlesex.
Mary E. Burton, Daur, 16, Scholar, Kilburn, Middlesex.
Ellen G. Burton, Daur, 12, Scholar, Selby, Yorkshire.
Mary Bowers, Serv, Unm, 30, Cook, born Carlton, Yorkshire.

27th July 1882
Selby Brewing Company (Limited), Prospectus says they will Lease the family business of J. Burton which had been carried on by him for 70 years by him and his predecessors, from the 14th August 1882.

 ---------------
The Brewery was behind the Nag's Head Inn, Gowthorpe, Selby (according to an internet site) see John Burton c.1877 - 1881 :-

 ---------------
See next post for information about the Licensees' of the Nag's Head Inn, Gowthorpe, Selby, Yorkshire, 1861 - 1890s.

In the 1851 Census it is difficult to determine the Nag's Head (pubs unamed), but Sarah Hood, 56 yrs in 1851 is near several premises occupied by Innkeepers, in Selby.
 --------------
I had something in my mind regarding the Standering surname as though the name was familiar and didn't know why.

Fifty years ago I recall a great debate as a small boy over what type of bird was in a motto my Grandmother had.
 ...

I heard about incursions over the Scottish - English border and also Bonnie Prince Charlie mentioned and the Battle of Culloden.

Regarding the above about Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Battle of Culloden, I cannot rule out being related to Matthew Hood and Elizabeth Byard of Wistow (married 18th April 1682), near Selby.

Samuel Henson of Wistow married Hanna Byard, Affid: 23rd April and married 24th April 1679 at Wistow, Yorkshire.

Samuel Henson of Wistow married Mary Dunn in 1713.

Samuel Henson, Gent of Wistow, died in 1717 and in his Will he left his lands at Sikehouse to his Wife, Mary and 600l. to his Daughter, Mary Henson when she reached 21.

Samuel Henson's daughter Mary Henson married Dr John Burton, M.D., of York, on 2nd January 1734-5 [Ecclesiastical year]

Dr John Burton of York (husband of Mary Henson) was arrested for Treasonable conduct rendering help to the Pretenders [Bonnie Prince Charlie's] Army and John Burton became one of the Prisoners of the '45 [1745] Rebellion.

Dr John Burton is listed in Prison at York and then London and is related by Marriage (and family) to Matthew Hood of Selby, buried at Selby in 1717.
