Bristol Police
« on: Sunday 24 July 05 06:01 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My great great grandfather, George Knight was a Police Constable in Bristol during the 1860's. He is listed in the 1861 census, however in the 1871 census he is not shown and his wife, Caroline is listed as being a widow, and their last child, Edward was born in 1870. There is no record of great great grandfather George's death in the BD&M. Can anyone suggest where I might search to find out what happened to him? Perhaps someone has access to the Bristol Police records. I live in Australia so access to British records that are not available on-line is very difficult. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Max,

Try the Gloucestershire board instead. I'll bet someone there can help you with this.

I've got ancestors from Bristol, too. :) The other side of the family (from London) has people disappearing for many years and no trace at all of several others - even though I know that they were very much alive!

I'm sure you'll get a good response on the Gloucestershire board. Ask about the British Isles Vital Records Index (BIVRI). Someone could perhaps do a lookup of George Knight to find out when he died and perhaps where he's buried. Maybe someone with a relative who was in the police force can advise you how to contact their archives.

I found a relative who was in the police force in London here: http://www.lightage.demon.co.uk/POLNOTES.htm

I couldn't find your George Knight listed, but you might want to double-check just in case.

I'm quite new to all this myself, but I hope that's of some use to you.

Good luck and best wishes,
Vicky

Hi there

Did you get anywhere with Bristol Police records?
I am trying to trace the career of John Carpenter, born 11th May 1855 in Calne, Wilts.
He was in the police force in Stockley and then became a police sergant in Bristol. (1881 census)

He died 27th May 1911.

Any help welcome
