finding a butcher in sussex
« on: Sunday 24 July 05 06:00 BST (UK) »
Hi    I am trying to find the parents of William Butchers He was b.1825 Mountfield.
I have looked in the IGI and VRI and cannot find him.
He got married in1851 so would probably with his wife who I have details on.

Maybe he is in the 1841 census he would have been abt 15.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Sue.

Hi Susie,

It's always helpful to give as much information as possible

I assume you don't have William's marriage certificate or you would know his father's name.  However, if you will give me his wife's name I can search for their marriage, then we can go on from there.

Cheers

Hi mobo
No he did not marry twice we think that was a misprint in transcribing
in 1871 It is Miriam and the same in 1881 census
It seems very unlikley he would marry in 1851 divorce and then marry the same person in 1861  Mind you stranger things have happened ;D

Okay, here is their marriage record

William BUTCHER married
Miriam Susannah HILDER
in 1851 in Battle
March Quarter 7 307

You will have to order a copy of their marriage certificate, which you can do online at

www.1837online.com

quoting all the information above

it will cost £7.00 (or equivalent in dollars) and will take about a week to arrive.

This will give you William's father's name, which will help you find his birth and parents' marriage, which in turn will pinpoint the family on Census Returns.

Happy hunting !!

Thank Mobo

Would he be in the 1841 census living with his parents I do not want to get his certificate just yet as being in Australia it costs me more with the exchange but I will if I have to I will.

You have been very helpful thank you

Susie,

I don't think I explained myself sufficiently -  In order to find out who his parents were - you first have to get a copy of his marriage certificate, otherwise you won't be able to tie him up to the right BUTCHER family in Sussex (it's a very common name you know)

So, I'm afraid you'll just have to 'bite the bullet' and buy one if you really want to find his parents.
