He enlisted into the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers Regiment on 10 December 1909.
His Regimental Number was 13801 and he reached the rank of Lance Corporal.
He saw service in England and in Europe during WW1, had 2 wound stripes and was awarded the following medals;

Hi Rawiri,

This is a real toughie. There is no Richard Knebel on the whole of Ancestry, apart from one born in the 1960s (from memory) - and very few Knebels at all.

This might be stretching the facts to fit the theory just too far, but there is a London family of Knebels with father and son both named Rudolph, the son of about the right age, father born in Germany. Could there be a remote possiblity that with the anti-German sentiments at the time of WW1 that they both changed their names to Richard, in order to sound more English?

Nah - probably not. Worth a punt, I thought!

Cheers,

Ros

Hey Rawiri, I've just read manmac's reply to you in Armed Forces. Seems my idea was not as wacky as I thought!

Here they are in 91 and 01. Can't find them before that:

Hello there Rawiri, I realise this thread was 9 years ago but I hope you read this message, I believe we share the same ancestors and that my great great grandfather was Rudolph Knebel - I can trace him back like this, my father's name is Peter, my grandfather's name is Arnold, then my great grandfather was Henry (full name seemed to be Henry William Rudolf Knebel), and great great grandfather Rudolph who emigrated from Germany to England in the 1800s, I believe his full name was Karl Heinrich Rudolph.  My grandfather also told me we had an ancestor who was a close friend of Goethe, and after research I believe this to be Karl Ludwig von Knebel, but whether he was a direct or indirect ancestor I have yet to find out!  It would be great to compare notes and family history, I am intrigued that Rudolph then moved to New Zealand, if you read this then please do get in touch :o) , Angela Sharman nee Knebel, in the UK
