Thanks so much Chris and Trish. Your information, plus Lily M’s contributions from 2016, have convinced me that the Adam Alderson baptised in 1765 at Barnard Castle in Durham is my ancestor. I also think it is very likely that the Sarah Hutchinson who married James Barry in Pittington (thanks Lily!) is Adam’s wife Elizabeth’s sister. This explains Adam and Elizabeth’s daughter having a cousin “Mr Burry of Durham”. (There are 3 different variations of this family name – Barry, Berry, Burry.)
As for Adam not naming any of his children after his parents – it does seem a bit unusual, but he was an articled clerk at the time of his marriage and no doubt he could see a successful future for himself as an attorney. He may have wanted to distance himself from his humble beginnings as the son of a weaver.

After spending some time this afternoon looking at the Alderson family, I'm sure that the Adam Alderson, who was the solicitor in London, was the Adam Alderson born in Barnard Castle.  Although he didn't name any of his children after his parents, he did name some after his siblings.
Familysearch.org has quite a of information on the family.  One of Adams brothers, William Alderson also seem to have worked and died in London.  He was a tailor.  I looked at a copy of his will, and although I couldn't read it all, it did mention the sum of £4000, which would be an enormous amount of money today.  What really convinced me was the fact that in his will he mentioned houses that he owned in Barnard Castle.

My relative was Carlisle Bamlett, husband of Adam's second daughter, Ann.  They had 8 children and two of them had 'Barry' as part of their name - James Barry Bamlett and Sarah Louisa Barry Bamlett.

Now to try and find out more about Mr Barry!

Just off to fetch our grandson for the day. I will post the details a little later. I found a very detailed will for James Barry on Familysearch giving lots of family info. Will post a link to that too

Until later....

James Barry was Elizabeth Hutchinson’s nephew.  He died 4 November 1848 in Durham.  He doesn't appear to be married or to have any siblings.  He left a detailed will and made bequests to many people including named cousins, and he also mentions his Great Grandma Charlton.  There is a copy on Familysearch.org

I have further info on all of Adam and Elizabeth's children that I am happy to share if anyone is interested. In particular the 3 sons, all of whom moved to Australia. I am a direct descendant of James.
