John Halford - 1871 Census in Hemington, Leicestershire
« on: Thursday 29 September 16 13:35 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a record of John Halford (b. abt 1821 as of Census, actually 1817 as of Baptism Record in Hemington, Leicestershire, England) in the 1871 Census or his death record. I have found him in the 1851 and 1861 Censuses.

After doing more research, I found a John Halford in the 1871 Census Record, widowed and living with two daughters and two grandaughters. As the children are not present on the 1851 and 1861 Censues, I researched them back and found that the John Halford in this record is not the John Halford in my tree. There are records in 1881 and 1891, which also seem to be the same John married to a Margaret.

I believe John's wife Elizabeth (unable to find marriage record so I am uncertain of her surname) died 1866. I have a burial record for her, although she is referred to as 'Eliza' and the actual town of burial is missing; it states ,Leicestershire, England, which makes me think perhaps there should be a town before the comma?

If anyone is able to help me I'd be really grateful. I've added the information about the 'wrong' John to make it easier. I've been looking for weeks now, but either I'm doing something wrong or the record is unavailable!

Thanks everyone! :)

EDIT: If anyone is able to find his son George Halford (b. 1849) whilst they are looking please let me know. I also can't find him on the 1871 Census.

If this is the burial on 11 Feb 1866 then it isn't John's wife as she was aged 8, abode Hemington.

There is a possible death burial for John on 4 May 1877 at Castle Donnington, aged 57.

Thank you, can I ask where you have accessed the burial records from? I have used a website for this that doesn't state the age of the individual. :(

I have an Leicestershire burial index CD.  It doesn't give the full information from the parish record but it's handy for narrowing down possibilities as it gives name, age, abode and parish of burial.

The CD doesn't cover municipal cemeteries so the 1863 one isn't on there, but the Welford Road CD has a burial 24 Nov 1863, Elizabeth Halford aged 74 of Gray Street, St Mary.
