After a day at the Teesside Archives still no further forward. The Marjorie born Hartlepool is not her as she died in 1909. Checked various marriages including the one to Reg Smith again no joy. Running out of options but thanks to everyone for their input.

Could you copy over the whole of the Mother's death notice, if possible, or scan it?

Were you able to check school records while you were there? I believe that many of the school admission registers are still closed under the 100-year rule, but if you can work out the most likely school(s) then the archivists may be able to do the search on your behalf. This should at least give you a date of birth, from which you can then search the 1939 register.

The assistant at the archives did try the school index but could not trace Marjorie or any siblings. The list at the moment is very limited with only certain schools available so that doesn't help. She did try her best but also seemed at a loss to what steps to take next.

Very odd that there's no trace of her birth
The only other vague possibility I can come up with is the marriage in Scarborough in 1929 between Madge Sanderson & Donald C. Hartley

Have you got her Mother's death certificate, to see if Marjorie was the informant?

There were two births in Hartlepool. One in 1905 and one in 1909. The one in 1909 died in 1909 but not the one in 1905, parents Thomas William and Annie Eliza who were still in Hartlepool 1911.
