Barretts of Donegal
« on: Sunday 25 September 16 20:11 BST (UK) »
Hello,  I was recently in Ireland where I spent time in New Inn with my cousins.  I was told by my cousins that the Barrett family came from Donegal, near Poulmucka. There were two Barrett cousins farming next to each other.  One was my great grandfather Michael Barrett.  I'm hoping someone here is related to the other Barrett cousin and can fill me in.  The time frame would be 1855-1875.  I've checked the Griffith's Valuations and only see a Thomas Barrett in Knocknaquilla, which is not exactly "next door" to the farm.  There is a Quinn opposite my great grandfather's land... but am unsure if any of this siblings married a Quinn.  Fannin/Fanning could be an option.

Warm Regards,

Knocknaquill and Poulmucka are correct (my errant finger put in the extra a, my bad).  I misremembered the name; it is Maurice Barrett, not Thomas Barrett.  Regardless, I am still in search for information with regard to the Barrett family and the two cousins.

Are you spelling townlands correctly?

"...Barrett family came from Donegal, near Poulmucka...."

Can't find Poulmucka in Donegal. Find that and you can get a Parish!

Hi all

This is county Tipperary not Donegal .
Knocknaquill is in the Civil Parish of Knockgraffon near Cahir in south Tipperary . For Catholic purposes it is the Catholic Parish of New Inn and Knockgraffon .

Oh how confusing, there is a townland in Tipperary called Donegal.

Still don't see Poulmucka though.

Ah found it, I think, a village Poulnamucky in the townland of Ballingeary East, just beside Donegal.

Hi all

I am sorry I was not familiar with Donegal , but I checked and it is a townland in the Civil Parish of Knockgraffon and the Catholic Parish of New Inn and Knockgraffon . Knocknaquill and Poulmucka are also in the same Parish for research purposes .
  Sorry for the confusion

Hi again

There is a marriage between Maurice Barrett and Judith Fanning on Feb. 6th 1825 in New Inn

There is another marriage between Michael Barrett and Eleanor Fanning on July 10th 1821

No sign of a Quinn Barrett marriage .
