Do you know something about Smolnik? There are five places Smolnik (I would exclude 3), and three Smólnik in Poland. 
Is there a Polish name and what about his roots? He might have German or Austrian ancestors very near or very distant.
forcibly removed - we don't know it. To work in Germany might be his own decision, a chance for a better life than in occupied Poland.
