Edward Despard
« on: Wednesday 21 September 16 11:06 BST (UK) »
Hi I am trying to trace Edward Despard whom I believe to be the father of George Francis Despard (my great grandfather)
Birth 1843  Queen's Co. (Laois), Ireland - Death 8 MAR 1916  12 Burmah Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim, Ireland. Married to Susan Smith abt 1844 - 22nd Nov 1898.
Edward is on their marriage certificate as a witness as is William Smith, so assume to be fathers.
I have found about three Edwards who could be the father but no evidence.
Thanks
John Despard

What is the address  where  George Despard  was living as on the marriage certificate, please?   as that may give  a clue  to the address of his father.

There is no address on the marriage cert.
But it was at: Ballycahane, Guilcagh, County Waterford. Some info I have:

"At 18, when he joined the RIC police force, he was described as 5’9 ¼”, a Protestant and a labourer. (RIC records HO184/21 no. 27425)
He was “registered” with the Royal Irish Constabulary on 21/01/1862 at 18 years having been “recommended” by B Thacker J.P.

On 08/06/1862 he was posted to (S) Tipperary
On 20/09/1864 he resigned saying that he was going to emigrate. Apparently this plan failed to materialise and he was re-engaged on 19/12/1864.
On 30/07/1865 he transferred to (N) Tipperary

By authority no. RENG67 26910, he was given permission to marry on 14/03/1872.  His wife was Susan Smith from Tipperary.  The marriage certificate says she was resident at Baylough and employed as a servant.  He appears to have been stationed at Ballyporeen.

Their marriage certificate says that her father was William Smith, a woodranger probably from County Waterford.  He was witness to the marriage together with a John Thompson.

They were married by licence at Ballycahane in the parish of Guilcagh in County Waterford.

On 01/06/1873 he was transferred to Kings County"

Regards
John

Have you noticed the ancestry tree's which show parents as William Edward Despard 1815 and mother Mary born 1815 Ireland and passed away 1873  ?Donnaghmore, Ireland. Not very conclusive tree.

Apart from entry 1840 Military (and the comment in the marines)  ? The only source item the tree shows for William Edward Despard is an entry - UK, Royal Naval Officers' Service Records Index, enrolment date 26 October 1855 - Honorary Lieutenant Colonel  ???

Second tree gives Edward Despard - 1820 - 1872 -  Donaghmore, Laois, Ireland. The death record attached gives birth 1788 - passed away 1872 aged 84 years. Registered Donnaghmore.

Third one William Edward Despard 1825 -24 July 1898 with a source of probate record London 6 December 1898 and Mary 1815 - 1873.

Perhaps they are a work in progress  ???
