William Greenwell of Corbridge

Hi,

There is some potential conflict in information obtained regarding the above. I believe that he was baptised in 1739 in Corbridge and married Mary Greenwell in 1773 and Mary Charlton in 1779, both in Corbridge. Some records gathered suggested that he was 25 and 31 when marrying which indicates a birth year of around 1748 but I cannot find anything that matches this. The other thing is that it is unusual for someone to first marry when over 30 years old in those days.

Does anyone have research on the Greenwells in Corbridge and can provide any input to clarify details?

The second Marriage you have for William does not state he is a Widower.
Witnesses at the 1st Marriage were Michael Greenwell/Mary Brown/Wiliam Armstrong.

Firstly what Children do you have for William/Mary?
Do you have a Burial for William to confirm his dob?
These need to be established first before looking for a Baptism.

Hi Trish,

I recently found the death of a William that you mentioned in 1824 showing his age that matched the 1739 baptism making me think I do have the right connection and also the death of I presume his wife Mary also in the same year.

I have the burial records of the assumed first wife Mary Greenwell on 9 April 1777 followed 2 days later by his son William. The second son named William born later I would presume is with Mary Charlton.

On the marriage records with Mary Charlton, do the Corbridge parish records on marriages at that time generally show whether a person was single or widow/widower?

Often Marriages say if the person is a Widow/Widower but I am not sure at that time if the Corbridge Vicar did that. The info I got was from FreeREG.
There were 3 William Greenwell Marriages 1766/1773/1779 in Corbridge, so if 2 were your William there was another around also.
As you have found a Burial for the 1st Mary, and first Son William I would say you are on the right track
