Joseph DOUGLAS / LIMAVADY
« on: Thursday 15 September 16 18:41 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have been searching for information/photo on Joseph Douglas born in Limavady 1910. He married Bridget McGuinness in 1941/42 and went on to have a daughter in 1942. He was killed in an accident at Keady Quarry Limavady (as was his dad Henry some years later). The accident happened in 1945 when he was 35. He left his wife Bridie and my eldests sister A. A as we know her was only 3 when this happened. I know he was buried in St Canices Cemetary Limavady but there is no headstone for whatever reason. My mum and A moved back in with my grandparents in Drumalief and then on to Scotland. She was adopted by my dad Johnny Deighan. I know she attended Roe Valley school for a short time in 1947 as i found  a picture of her in Limavady Past and Present site. I dearly want to obtain a picture of her own daddy as she is now in her 70's and has never seen a picture of him.  I would appreciate any help at all with this. I know he had a sister Cissy and they originally lived in Terrydoo Walker there was also a sister called May McLaughlin and a brother callled James who moved to England many years ago. The only thing i have is a clipping from the local Coleraine newspaper as there had been an inquest into his death but sadly no picture. Thank you

The youngest Joseph Douglas in 1911 census is 3 years old (so born c1908)-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Aghanloo/Drumalief/594076

However, there is a birth for a Joseph Douglas born 18 Apr.1910 Carnett Balteagh with father Henry-

Son Henry Douglas born 1912-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for this Aghadowey, its the middle one for sure as his father was Henry as mentioned in the newspaper clipping when he was killed at Keady quarry in 1945
I continue my search for a photo of him and more about his short life.
I have also found he lived at 1297 Argyle Street in Glasgow in 1945 with my mum Bridget Jane McGuinness before they moved back to Terrydoo to live with his father Henry and working at Keady. They were only back a matter of weeks before he died in August 1945

Thanks for this Mary, I am sure this must be him and it gives me more to go on with my search. I had found a Douglas in the 1911 Census showing a Henry aged 23 who I thought would be my Josephs father and also showed his Father as Henry (again) and his Mother Sussana.  This was at 122 Spencer Road under Londonderry No5 Urban Londonderry.  Not sure if this was the correct route but now I can follow this along and see how I go.  Its like a needle in a haystack as so many families passed these names down to their sons and daughters.  I appreciate your help with this. Margaret

Possible candidate for Henry Douglas who married Anna/Annie Millar (GRONI online shows the marriage in 1909) and had children including Joseph on 18 April 1910:

The one on Spencer Road married a Mary Ann Limerick in 1917, so doesn't really fit.

Gaffy, this looks more promising as the newspaper clipping regarding the inquest into his death back in  1945/46 when Joseph was killed in an accident in Keady Quarry says the following from his father "Henry Douglas, Terrydoo-Walker said the deceased who was his eldest son was 35 yrs of age"  The paper clipping was from the Constitution and the date looks like January 1946
Thanks for this I can now discount the Spencer Road one.

When Henry Douglas married Anna Millar on 20 December 1909, his address was given as Drumramer (hers was Carnet) and his father given as Henry Douglas, a cottier.  The 1901 and 1911 censuses show this family in Drumramer:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Keady/Drumrommer/1525680/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Keady/Drumramer/596728/

The Head of Family in these census returns looks like a Mary Jane Warke (father Alexander), who married a Henry Douglas (father William) in Limavady RC church on 19 July 1874, since this couple went on to have a number of children who match those in the census returns.  They also a son Henry in 1882:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1882/02798/2026914.pdf

Critically, the baptismal record for this son Henry (which cites him as Henry James Douglas, but parents names and location match perfectly) has an annotation to confirm that he went on to marry Annie Millar on 20 December 1909. Bingo.

Henry Douglas senior (Mary Jane Warke's husband) died in 1892 when Henry junior (Henry James)  was only 10:
