Elder Family of Glasgow
« on: Saturday 23 July 05 19:19 BST (UK) »
My family is found in quite a few areas in and around the City of Glasgow.  First names common with my line are John, David, Joseph, Robert, Isaac, Thomas and William.
Other known surnames connected with my family are Johnston, Stewart, Young, Martin, McAllister, McIntosh, Russell, Best, Carson, and Fyfe.

I have searched through the 1881/1891/1901 Census records and found most. I have also searched Scotland’s People website and found some of the birth/death/marriage records. Unfortunately, I have also found quite a few that I can’t make a connection to.

If you have any connection the Elder family or any of the above names, would like to hear from you.
Elder, Stewart, Johnston, Baskerville, Marks, Carson, Leitch, Bulloch, Thomson, Allen, Campbell, Gordon, Murray, Kelly, Chambers, Black, Cheyne, Youngson, Williamsdaughter, Anderson, Briggs, Pirie, Clark, Philp, Mannel, Lander, Rough, Lean, Bate, Brown, Oliver, Kitt, Shards, Bennet, Young, Petrie, Wylie, Herbertson, Martin, McAlister, Best, Ginn, Ross, McIntosh, McGillivray, Russell, Pettigrew, Fyfe, Barrie

Hi Janice,

I am a Carson by birth.  As far as I can make out, my grandmother was a Margaret Carson, her parents were Thomas Carson and Elizabeth Crombie.  I believe they were from Ayr, but Margaret married Camillo Granelli in 1908 in Glasgow.

Any connections do you think?

Hi Nina,

Thanks for replying.  My Carsons are from Northern Ireland. My gg-grandmother; Mary Carson married William Johnston in Ahoghill, Antrim, Northern Ireland. They had at least 5 children;
Martha, Henry, Mary, Elizabeth and Robert, all of whom were born in Ireland. Mary Johnston my great-grandmother married Thomas Elder in Glasgow.

Hi Janice

I don't have any connection to the Elder family but I am trying to trace my relative who is supposed to have owned an Engine Works in Glasgow. I can't find him googling but I do keep finding information about this gentleman, John Elder 1824-1869 (father David Elder). Maybe he is connected to you?

Hi Lyla,

Thank you for replying to my post. We have not found any connection to John Elder from John Elder Shipping. Our family, although originally from Scotland, lived in Ireland for approximately 100 - 150 years, then came back to Scotland sometime in the mid-1800's. (Primarily in the Glasgow area.)

I have had the same family appear time and again, because of the names of John and David, that I gather are quite common in the Elder family. (Wish there were a connection, so this search could be a little easier. Alas, our family seems to be 'common old working folk'.

Thanks again.

Janice

Hi Zep

I looked on the freesearch in scotlandspeople and there were no hits for the name Rudall in Scotland between 1900 & 1955. Either the name has been mis-transcribed or the spelling was different.
There is 1 death for RUDDALL

For RIDDELL
1901 Census                                                          1909
Statutory Register Births 1900 - 1905                      201
Statutory Register Marriages / Banns 1900 - 1930   610
Statutory Register Deaths 1900 - 1955                  1525
Wills & Testaments 1900 - 1901                                  21

What documentary evidence do you have about their marriage?
Have a look at the advice on searching which scotlandspeople offers to see if you need to modify the way you are carrying out your searches.
e.g. McAllister could be MacAllister or Macallister or Mac Allister or even McAlistair. Wildcard searches can be fruitful.
Was Jane their only child or were/are their siblings you could track down?
You are getting into the realms where people may still be alive and that makes it more difficult to find (my own mother is 94 and still very much active and alive - work out her birth year for yourself!)

If you have any , even small snippet of information post it for us.

hi...well the jane mcallister i am looking for had siblings elizabeth ,mary and gordon. we think jane was born between 1915 and 1920 in lanarkshire and she was the oldest child ..so the marriage between  gertrude rudall and mc allister would be approx 1913 to 1915 hopefully.sadly my friend never knew his grandad mc allister and doesn't know his name....but for some reason thinks it may be george. could the rudall have been transcribed rudell?
