Anne Mary died in Hull 09/06/1991

early Addesses I have is :

on birth certificate when had son (out of marriage/ oh the shame !!!!) - lived at: 5 Beverley Villas Cullercoats North Shields

On marrauge certificate lived at: 28 Dockwray Square, North Shields

If she had an illegitimate son why was his middle name Boardman & not his surname ?

Her son was born Nicola Boardman (yes this is a man’s name although highly unusual) - is this a clue ??

Mary gave him up for adoption and he went to an orphanage from 1943 - 1948

When she met her husband Kenneth Steele Newton and married in 1944 - they adopted Nicola back (as couple) in 1948 changing his name to Dennis, and making the Boardman his middle name

This his name now is Dennis Boardman Newton

I can think of 4 possible scenarios.
1) She's the legitimate child of GW Boardman but went unregistered.
2) She's the illegitimate child of GW Boardman who gave his permission for her to use his name but went unregistered.
3) She's the illegitimate child of ? registered under another name & "adopted" by a Boardman couple.
4) She's the illegitimate child of ? Boardman but went unregistered & made up a father's name.
There may be others.
1 & 2 I think are less probable than 3 & 4 with 4 being the most likely.

to confrim: In the course of my research we found out Mary Anne or Anne Mary had my father in law illegitimately and put up for adoption

When  she met her husband they adopted him back and changed his name,  so my father in law has had contact with PAC over finding out his roots  - quite a shock for a 74 year old man who through his dad was his dad

Anyway PAC have not been able to find anything out about where his mum came from / or her roots , so if they can’t crack the case I wonder if I will ever solve this

The more research I have done am thinking you are right with theory 4  - and we will Unfortunately never find out the truth

When Anne/Mary was "adopted" it was before the Adoption Act so these things were arranged privately & few if any records were kept.

David from ancestry here! Glad to see the rootshat community rallying to the cause!

Been brewing over this a lot and one thing that stands out is the address given on Nicola/Dennis' birth cert -  Beverley Villas.

According to this article, it appears that this is on the site of St Oswald's Home For Girls in Cullercoats:

A hunch tells me that this might be more than a mere coincidence; it is certainly worth eliminating from your enquiries! I'd get in touch with The Children's Society to see if they can locate Mary Ann Boardman in their archives:

Yes I googled the address and saw the article on St Oswald's Homes for Girls.

I am sure it noted that by the 1920's  it had been turned into normal housing, but is this just more than mere coincidence I wonder.
I think there is a good posisbility she had a connection to it.

I will get in touch with The Children's Society to see if they can locate Mary Ann Boardman in their archives

From what I can glean St Oswald's opened in Cullercoats in 1891, the original building became The Beverely Hotel in 1900, and the home then moved to a site just adjacent.

The home operated until 1939 when the girls were evacuated to Kendal and never reopened post war. The girls stayed on until 18 at St Oswald's. So if Mary Ann was born in 1921 she'd have been discharged a few weeks after the onset of war in 1939. I would imagine the Beverley Hotel employed many girls from St Oswald's over the years. Pure conjecture! But who knows!
