I am trying to trace my Grant family roots back to the Strathspey area and have established that Lewis Grant born 1790 in Edinburgh had parents called Lewis Grant and Margaret. The following is a transcription of his parents marriage lines (from Scotland's People)
Can anyone help me understand the marriage lines:
"Marriages in 1786 20th January
Grant Lewies (Lewis) Pensioner and Mgt Grant, widow of John Campbell, late soldier of the 48th (or could be 78th) Regiment of Foot, gave up their names for Proclamation of Bans Matrimonial. "
Question: Does this mean that Lewis Grant was a pensioned off soldier??
How would I find out which regiment he was in?
Is there any way to determine the maiden name of Margaret his wife?
Thank you
