Hi all my gt grandfather served in KOYLI as a private during ww1 in November 1914 he was captured. Later on in war he escaped but was recaptured.

my question is on his 1914 Star medal he was awarded a Rose & Clasp could this be for his escape?

steve,the rose+clasp were instituted to be worn on the 1914 star and his ribbon bar.
the clasp was awarded to all those who were under fire in france+belgium between 5th aug-22nd nov 1914,it means your g/father was in the retreat from mons,this is worn on his medal,the rose is worn on the ribbon of his 1914 star when hes wearing his ribbon bar,its not worn on the medal,mack

Once again thanks for replying this scenario fits in with him being captured in Nov 1914 from his medal card I notice he embarked in Sept. 1914

Hi Annie his name was Charles William Miller but I'm not sure what type of research you are thinking of as far as I know I have all relevant details on him except for him fighting in Boer war. There is no trace of him under his name but I have just had a flash of inspiration.

He was born in 1882 the illegitimate son of Kate Miller but a year later she married a Mark Green. Now in 1891 census my gt grandfather is listed with surname Green not Miller so maybe he joined army for the Boer War under the surname Green. Does anyone now where there is a website so I could check.
