Search For Grandad
« on: Sunday 04 September 16 16:12 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me, I have tried with no success to trace my maternal granddad.  My grandma died in 1958 when I was 5, and my late mum just said her dad died years ago and his name was Richard, that's as much as I got from her.  My granddads name was Richard Barry, he married my grandma Mary Jane Dalby in ?? I know from the 1911 census my grandma was 24, still single and living at home with her mum and sister, so she must have married after then, but doesn't say where. Prior to that on the 1901 she was definitely with them living in Lower Wortley Leeds. My aunt was Born in 1914 my mum in 1919, so my grandparents must have married between 1911 and 1913/14. Iv not been able to find any trace of him at all,  and know nothing accept his name and he was down as deceased on my grandmas death certificate. Appreciate any help.

Have you tried looking for the family in the 1939 register, that would tell you whether or not he was still alive then?

If I've got the right family on the 1939 register, then there is no Richard Barry with Mary Jane Barry (bn 1886), Leeds C B

Looking at Freebmd there are no Richard Barry deaths in Yorkshire between 1919 and 1939. I wonder if he left the family rather than died, hence the reluctance to talk about him?

I was wondering that too, Groom.  I think the marriage cert would be useful, especially as you have no idea as to Richard's age or profession e.g. if he was a seaman, he might feasibly have died at sea etc.
