Scran.ac.uk

Not sure where to post this so put it here.

Scran is a charity that holds many many pre approved images that people can use. The site is by subscription and I do not really want to take out a subscription to find out if one image contains a picture of a person or not.

The person I am interested in is John Nevin the mine manager at Leadhills, Lanarkshire who died in 1867. A web search gave this link

http://www.scran.ac.uk/database/record.php?usi=000-000-510-350-C

and the description on the internet page was

Brief History of Lead Mining in Leadhills Parish. A black and white photograph of Leadhills Village. ... 1861 to 1867, and his son John succeeded him. He died in ...

Now I am trying to find out if the site holds a picture of John Nevin or his son john French Nevin and what the rest of the description referred to above says.

If anyone has a subscription to the site and can help I would be most grateful

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hi

The link provided shows nothing similar to the description you provided.

You will probably need to bite the bullet and browse then buy.
That seems to be an alternative to join.

Thanks for the reply.

I think I tried to simplify it and only ending up confusing folks.

I did an internet search on

John Nevin died 1867 Leadhills

and it came up with the link above and the description I mentioned. By clicking on the link you get the image as above but not the description which is part of what I suspect is hidden behind the subscription wall

Hi
I can access Scran using my library membership.
Unfortunately, there are no images of the Nevins there. The information you have is displayed alongside an image of Leadhills village (copyright of Wanlockhead Museum Trust).

Thank you Aidem,

for looking that up for me. It was on the off chance that there might have been a photo.

Thank you for your help

Hi,
Did you see the little medal and the cheese dish? They are both marked with 'Nevin' - I'd be giddy if they belonged to one of mine ;)

Have you contacted the Leadhills Miners Library?  Their owners, the Leadhill Heritage Trust, hold the copyright on some of the images on SCRAN, so may be able to provide you with more information.  Their website is at http://www.leadhillslibrary.co.uk/

jennywren - thank you for the information, no I had not seen the medal or the dish. I know John's son John French Nevin left an extensive infantry when he died it may be listed in that.

Archivos - I had been looking at the Leadhills Miners Library associated places yesterday so certainly something to add to the list of things to follow.

My connection to John Nevin is that he was the brother of my Great Great Great Grandfather

I presume you mean that he left an extensive inventory? ;D
