I am trying to find information about John Paulin who was living in new Zealand , possibly around Wellington or top of the South Island. He was a seaman, possibly a whaler and was known to be there from 1860 to 1870, as we have evidence of an Australian relative stopping with him during those years. John was born in London 1815-1816.I am wondering if possibly there ore early census or electoral rolls that I could look up. Can anybody advise where I might find a seaman who may have settled in these areas please.
Thanks for your help.
Kevynne

I found a reference to an old Paulin Family Photo Album online.  The name Paulin in your post rang a bell with me, as there was a family of that name living in Moera, Lower Hutt, where I grew up, short commuting distance out of Wellington!   My Mum and Dad both grew up in the area as well, and I know that they had known Paulin Families as well when they were kids.  So they have been around in the Hutt Valley for a good while, and there are probably still some descendants around the area.

Could these people in the album be any of your Paulin relatives?  Page 11

GRRR.

Yes to electoral rolls though, although I'm not sure how far they go back - but I'll check it out.  I'm sure someone will have more knowledge than me about these, as I'm a first generation Kiwi, so haven't had to track that far back for my own.

There's a record of a John, Ann, and daughter Mary Ann Paulin, and an Elizabeth Stevens disembarking at Riverton from the ship "Success" in the 1840's - can't see a date, though above the entry it could be indicated as coming from Sydney in December 1840.  The ship was wrecked in 1845.

( ;D ;D shame I can't find my own relative's early entry to NZ  ??? - but certainly not due to a lack of support from Rootschatters😄

There is also what looks to be a quite comprehensive tree going back tree on My Heritage, submitted from NZ. It includes the above 3 Paulin names, and more, plus parents of John and Ann also more children for John and Ann! Marriage and child for indicated for MaryAnn too.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to this tree, and don't have a sub, but I think you can get a free trial!

According to a "family tree" published at ancestry, The John PAULIN who arrived in NZ from Sydney per the vessel "Success" in March 1843, and who had wed Ann STEVENS in Sydney in 1841, was born in Woolwich, Kent, ENG and died in Southland, NZ aged 44 years, in 1860.

Magic Lucy 2. Great to get Kevynne a more definite arrival date for them.

Elizabeth Stevens may well be Ann (Stevens) Paulin's sister, or possibly her mother?

Right now, time for me to chase "The Chaser" - my pre- dinner TV slot!!

Mmm ... I was adding the John PAULIN / Ann STEVENS information more as a means of discounting this John PAULIN.    ;D

He died in 1860
... Kevynne seems to be looking for man of same name who was around between 1860 and 1870 ??

Hi Kevynne

As you know approx. birth year and place of birth for John PAULIN, are you able to give us any further information about him, please?
