Hi Rawiri,

Here is his death registration:

March q. 1864, Marylebone 1a/427.

This will give you the name of his parents for starters, but there is masses of stuff to be found by googling and I can't believe there isn't some sort of biography of him on line.

I found a sort of potted biography in the Dictionary of National Biography (GB) which I'll type out for you if all else fails.

Can't see him in the 1861 census (he seems to have spent most of his life serving in various colonies), but I'll give it another go.

Cheers,

Ros

Hi again,

Sorry, I just gave you the wrong information. His death cert. won't give the names of his parents. may offer other clues though.

and again ...

There is an extremely good biography of him in the Dictionary of NZ Biography (www.dnzb.govt.nz), along with a list of references which would presumably give further info (and includes a reference to his own journal, 1856).

There is also a family tree on Ancestry.com which you can access through worldconnect at rootscom (and possibly through Ancestry itself - I'm a subscriber so I can't tell if you can get into it that way).

Here's a nice quote:

A competent staff officer, Robert Wynyard was endowed with sound practical sense and average ability. He was a tall, handsome man, with a patrician style and much charm. A later military writer described him as 'undoubtedly the most popular man who ever came to New Zealand'.

Cheers,
