Good morning Gaffy
Many thanks for all the info. So many leads to chase up. The one which catches my eye is the first "Elizabeth Anne Todd married Robert Dunwoody in Belfast on 16 November 1871, her father Samuel was a 'manufacturer' and a William Alexander Todd was a witness, here was the family in 1901". This is very interesting. Can you tell me where I might see this record?

Thanks aghadowey
I found the marriage cert on groni.  The signature of William Alexander Todd , while not identical is very close to that on his own marriage cert.

The death record of Eliza Todd wife of late Samuel Todd manager of Grimshaw's is very hopefull.

The Belfast Newsletter describing 28 Regent Street as her son's residence and the presence of a Christopher Todd at her death, together with some of the other context posted (eg. Jane Stewart's 1874 will), is suggestive of the possibility that Christopher Todd may have been another son and sibling of John, William Alexander and Elizabeth Anne.  Hopefully someone will find something more conclusive to rule this in or define the relationship correctly.

Talking of Elizabeth Anne and as just an aside, husband Robert Dunwoody went on to become a locally renowned Belfast citizen, building up his tea business and becoming a Justice of the Peace (which is what 'Instire of the Peacly' meant in the 1901 census return, lol). He and Eliza Ann (Todd) Dunwoody were buried as follows:

Here's a 1927 obituary:  By the death of Mr. Robert Dunwoody, J.P., which took place at his residence, 92, Holywood Road, Strandtown, there passed away a gentleman who some years ago took a prominent part in the public affairs of the city.  A native of County Monaghan, Mr Dunwoody came to Belfast in his early life, and became eventually a well-known figure in the business life of the city and province as head for many years of the firm of wholesale tea merchants which carried on trade under the style of Messrs. R. Dunwoody & Co., Victoria Street.  The deceased was one of the founders of the Belfast Grocers' Association, and was also done the honour of appointment to the presidency of the Grocers' Federation of the United Kingdom in 1891.  He was appointed a magistrate for the city in 1909.  The late Mr. Dunwoody, who sat regularly on the bench in the local police courts, was one of a deputation consisting of the late Sir Daniel Dixon, the late Sir Samuel Black, Mr. Payne, J.P., which interviewed the then Chief Secretary, Mr George Wyndham, at Dublin Castle in reference to the unsatisfactory position of the two resident magistrates in Belfast as compared with that of the gentlemen who occupied similar positions in Dublin.  Although there was some delay an Act of Parliament was subsequently passed which placed these gentlemen on the desired footing.  Mr Dunwoody, who went to reside in England for a lengthened period in his later life, spoke on platforms across the water and at home in furtherance of the Unionist cause.  For the last few years he had been living in retirement in Belfast.

Getting to the bottom of the various Christopher Todds may open up leads, starting with the 3 in the PRONI Will Calendars Index.

1. The Christopher Todd who died on 17 December 1928 was the one I posted at replies #14 and #15 who married Isobella McGowan in 1864, then a Margaret Elizabeth Harvey in 1917 (she also has an entry in the PRONI Will Calendars Index).  This Christopher's parents were William (a farmer) and Eliza Todd and his birth based on census information and death record reported age was c. 1842-44.

2. The second Christopher Todd who died on 11 May 1940 had a reported death age of 60 and was possibly the one born on 2 December 1881 as the son of Robert and Agnes Todd:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Blaris/Ballymullan/1239468/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Blaris/Ballymullen/248586/

Bachelor Robert Todd, a farmer living in Ballymullan (Blaris civil parish) married spinster Agnes Todd living in nearby Clogher (Hillsborough civil parish) on 15 March 1870, his father was called Christopher Todd, a farmer (yet another Christopher Todd), hers was Samuel Todd, a farmer.

3. The third Christopher Todd who died on 7 May 1905 is one I've yet found little about, or indeed about his brother William Leck Todd, other than the 1901 census return I posted at reply #11, but  his brother William was still with the Pedlows in 1911:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Duncairn/Limestone_Road/141442/

And William's Wills Calendar index entry doesn't provide any obvious leads:

Todd William Leck of 75 Limestone Road Belfast retired warehouseman died 25 April 1932 Probate Belfast 17 June to Philip Brady cashier. Effects £607 0s. 3d.

Again based on census and death record reported age, this Christopher Todd was born c. 1835-36 and his brother William Leck Todd was born c. 1851-52.
