Samuel Todd born about 1820 Ireland possibly Antrim
« on: Sunday 21 August 16 13:11 BST (UK) »
I'm try to find my gggrandfather Samuel Todd, father of John and William Alexander Todd.  John was married to Elizabeth McCammond in 1883 in Belfast and William Alexander married Catherine Cowan in  1879 in Belfast.  On both marriage certificates Samuel is a witness and is recorded as a merchant and manufacturer respectively.  John was born in 1846 so I'm guessing Samuel would be about 1820.

All the best!

Marriage certificates do not usually indicate the relationship to the couple so "Samuel Todd" may not be the father.

Administration of the Estate of William Alexander Todd late of Dundela Villas Strandtown Belfast Merchant who died 13 March 1915 granted at Belfast to Kathleen Houston Married Woman.

If the above William Alexander Todd is the correct one then this Samuel Todd can be eliminated- son William died before 1903. www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Clifton/Eia_Street/961523

Probate of the Will of Samuel Todd late of 20 Eia-street Belfast Bookbinder who died 24 July 1903 granted at Belfast to James Todd Fitter. Will mentions son James, widow of late son William, daughter Isabella Gray, daughters Robina and Margaret.

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Clifton/Eia_Street/145224

Administration (with the Will) of the Personal Estate of Robina Lush Todd late of Eia Street Belfast Spinster who died 9 February 1922 granted at Belfast to James Wood Todd Artizan (Committee of Margaret Ellen Todd Sole Executrix) Effects £864 0s. 4d.

Todd Margaret Allen of 20 Eia Street Belfast and of Purdysburn Mental Hospital county Down spinster died 6 May 1927 at latter place Probate Belfast 6 July to Norman Graham M.D. Effects £800 5s. 10d.

The Will of William Charles Armstrong Todd late of Belfast Commission Agent who died 11 April 1893 at same place was proved at Belfast by Mary Josephine Todd of Eia-street Belfast Widow the sole Executrix.

Of course your Samuel Todd may not even have lived in Belfast.

Is this your John Todd? both census records list his birthplace as Co. Down
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Duncairn_Ward/Somerton_Road/1005054
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Duncairn/Somerton_Road/143055

Letters of Administration of Ernest Victor Todd late of Clarinda, Fortwilliam Park, Belfast, private 3rd Wellington Infantry Regiment New Zealand Expeditionary Force, who died 4 October 1917 granted at Belfast to John Todd, Clarinda, Fortwilliam Park, Belfast, justice of the peace. Effects: £349 0s 0d.

Added- baptismal register confirms that parents are John Todd & Elizabeth McCammond so the above is your John Todd.

Many thanks aghadowey. All comments are correct. John was the manager of gibsons jewellery shop in Belfast and William Alexander owned the house refurbishment business in Victoria street. Elizabeth McCammond was the daughter of William McCammond mayor of Belfast in 1895-6.
Samuel remains a mystery. I'd love to find proof he was the bookbinder or the manager of grimshaws wine merchants but I haven't so far.

According to census records William Alexander Todd was born co. Antrim and brother John Todd in co. Down but that could just mean Belfast area.

John Todd, wife (seems to have died in Cork) and son buried Belfast City Cemetery.

Still looking for their father Samuel...

Added- Samuel Todd the bookbinder had middle name of Bishop-

Thanks for the cemetery links. Bishop is interesting though I've not found it elsewhere in the family. John Todds wife died in 1951 in Upper Cresent Belfast. She had lived in Donaghadee for many years before that.
